Abstract:
An electrical connector (40) such as for a memory card (10) having an array of passageways (44) within which are respective contacts (52, 80, 100). Each contact (52, 80, 100) includes at least one resilient retention section (60, 62; 82, 84; 106) defined along a body section (56, 88, 102) thereof that upon contact insertion is deflected by a wall of a passageway (44). Upon application of ultrasonic energy E, plastic material of the housing adjacent an engagement portion (68, 70; 94, 96; 110) of the resilient retention section, flows locally allowing the resilient retention section to resile and thereafter extend into the surface of the passageway wall effectively becoming embedded therein to retain the contact in the passageway.

Each contact (52) includes a single leaf spring contact section (54) for mating with a pin contact (102, 104) of mating connector (100), and the passageways may have recesses (84a, 84b) permitting flexing of the pin contacts by the leaf spring contact.
