Abstract: An endoscopic surgical device 10 for retrieving severed tissue or foreign bodies from within a subject, the device comprises a support unit 12 and a tissue retrieving net system 16. The net system 16 is carried by the support unit 12 and may be inserted into the subject through an orifice or small incision and operated to retrieve tissue that has been severed by a conventional method. The net system 16 comprises a net 20, a net actuator24, a net deployment and retrieval assembly 28 for transmitting motion between the net 20 and its actuator 24. The net system 16 further comprises at least one net connector 80, 82disposed such that only one connector 82 is within an articulation zone bounded by A1, A2, defined by locations of severe bending of the device 10 during operation.

Abstract: A surgical device (10) for injecting a chemical agent within a subject for use in endoscopic injection therapies is disclosed. The device (10) includes a support body (20), a motion transmitting unit (25), an agent delivery system (30) and a guide housing (40). The motion transmitting unit (25) is movable relative to the support body (20). The agent delivery system (30) includes a needle (31) for extending into a subject and structure defining a conduit between the support body and the needle (31). The guide housing (40) has a flexible elongated body, and internal elongated passage and friction reducing material lining the passage. At least a portion of the motion transmitting unit (25) adjacent the needle (31) is slideably housed within the guide housing (40). The device (10) offers a surgeon improved ease of needle extension and retraction when the distal end of the endoscope is bent at acute angles.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for obtaining esophageal cells for diagnostic purposes comprises inserting the distal end of a flexible support body (12) in a patient's stomach via the esophagus and mouth so that the proximal support body end projects from the mouth. A balloon (40) at the distal support body end is inflated and the support body is withdrawn until the inflated balloon engages the sphincter at the stomach entrance. A support body location is marked that is a predetermined distance from the patient's dental arch when the inflated balloon engages the sphincter at the stomach entrance. The balloon is deflated and the support body is withdrawn so that the marked locatin is adjacent the patient's dental arch. The support body is withdrawn a second predetermined distance and a second support body location, adjacent the patient's dental arch, is marked. A cell collecting element is deployed from within the distal end of the support body so that the cell collecting element (890) is disposed in the esophagus within the predetermined distance from the sphincter. The support body is reciprocated through the second predetermined distance with the cell collecting element deployed so that cells from the esophagus within the second predetermined distance from the sphincter are deposited on the cell collecting element. The cell collecting element is retracted into the body so that it does not engage the esophagus wall, and the body is withdrawn from the patient.
