The invention provides a juice extractor for extracting juice from comestibles such as fruit and vegetables. The juice extractor (10) comprises a cavity (38) in which a comestible (100) is received and a spout (22) forming an outlet for delivering extracted juice from the juice extractor (10). The juice extractor (10) has a juice collection mechanism (70) for receiving juice extracted from the comestible (100) and delivering it to the spout (22). The entire juice collection mechanism (70) is removable from the juice extractor (10) for cleaning purposes. The juice collection mechanism (70) can also be removed from the juice extractor (10) as a single unit which makes the juice extractor (10) very easy to clean and maintain.

The cavity (38) is delimited by a deformable member (36) which is shaped so as substantially to surround the comestible (100). This allows a compressive force to be applied to the comestible (100) in an efficient and economical manner which applies an even load to the comestible (100) so that the skin of the comestible (100) is supported on all sides during pressing. This reduces the risk of the skin splitting and releasing zest or peel oil into the juice extracted from the comestible (100). The deformable nature of the deformable member (36) also allows fruits or vegetables of different sizes and shapes to be accommodated in the cavity (38) so as to make the juice extractor (10) more versatile.

A pathologic staging compression device prepares a biological sample for pathologic staging by compressing the sample to remove liquid fat from the sample. In one embodiment, the apparatus preferably includes a compression tube, a removable drainage planum to hold the compression tube, a fat containment and drainage system, a gauge to monitor the extrusion force, use of hydraulic pressure to generation the extrusion force for sample compression, and ejection of the compressed sample after the compression tube has been removed from the drainage planum. In another embodiment, the apparatus includes an integrated riser assembly to stabilize and align the compression tube.
