A method of examining a bodily function. A first set of frequency characteristics and amplitude characteristics of a first electrical signal deriving from rhythmic activity of a nerve in a living body is detected at a first condition. The nerve is stimulated to a second condition and a second set of frequency characteristics and amplitude characteristics of a second electrical signal deriving from the rhythmic activity of said nerve is detected. The fundamental frequency present in the frequency characteristics is identified. From the fundamental frequency the frequencies corresponding to a plurality of octaves of said fundamental frequency are calculated. The amplitude of said electrical signals at said octaves is identified. For said first signal a first amplitude ratio is calculated being the ratio of the amplitude difference between a first pair of said octaves, and the amplitude difference between a second pair of said octaves. For said second signal a second amplitude ratio is calculated being the ratio of the amplitude difference between said first pair of octaves, and the amplitude difference between said second pair of octaves. An octave ratio is calculated being the ratio of said first amplitude ratio to said second amplitude ratio. The octave ratio is used as a measure of said bodily function.

Apparatus and a corresponding method for the assessment of the effects of tinted illumination on a subject's visual system are provided. Colour controllable light sources provide the illuminant for an object field comprising features viewed against a background. A practitioner or the subject can effect movement of a feature such as a symbol or a ball. The subject views the feature at different locations and/or whilst in motion, having selected a tint for evaluation of visual comfort or performance. Some embodiments of the invention may be used to assess the effects of optimising tint for subjects who suffer from visual dyslexia or other impairments of the visual system. Other embodiments are directly operable by the subject in order to help the subject to select tinted eyewear for the enhancement of his or her visual performance.

A nystagmograph for judging whether chronic dizziness has resulted from cerebral disease or from internal ear disease by quantitatively identifying nystagmus to cause pupils to oscillate in various directions. The nystagmograph (1) is provided with: a case (2) disposed along a visual axis connecting respective visual lines of the inspector and subject to each other; a translucent reflecting mirror (7) arranged slantwise with respect to the visual axis in the case and separating a bright place on the side of the subject from a dark one on the side of the inspector; visual means (3) of enlarging an image on an eyeball of the subject and introducing said image to the field of view of the inspector; and a window of non-reflecting coated glass (6) for guiding an image with a fixed index to the side of the subject through the translucent reflecting mirror (7). Hence, the inspector observes the movement of pupils of the subject, inspects gaze nystagmus for judging central disease while opening the smoke glass (10) of the case (2), and, with the smoke glass (10) closed, inspects non-gaze nystagmus for judging peripheral disease.

A computerized electro-oculographic system has a rotatable subject chair (2) surrounded by a cylindrical screen (18) on which the desired optical stimuli from projectors (12, 16) are displayed. Eye movement signals are picked up by electrodes (6a-1) amplified (24, 26), calibrated (46), filtered (26) and digitized (28) for interface (30) with a computer (32). The tests to be run are selected by a keyboard (44) to operate the computer according to its programs (36). The computer signals are then displayed (38) and/or recorded (40, 42).

A portable ocular response testing device includes a portable housing, a plurality of lights for generating visible light within two eye spaces of the portable housing, a controller for operating the lights according to a prescribed pattern, and an imaging system to capture images of the eyes under varying lighting conditions to evaluate an ocular response of a user to the lighting conditions. In some instances, the portable device is used in the field of ophthalmology for complete assessment of optic nerve defects producing Marcus-Gunn pupil, detection and quantification of color blindness, and detection and follow up of eye abnormalities. In other instances, the device is adapted for screening of driving under influence (DUI) or Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) by performing multiple eye tests resulting in field screening of DUI or DWI cases.
