Abstract: A tool receiver or chuck (10) is provided which may receive a cutting tool (14) therewithin and non-rotatably retain the tool relative to a rotary driving device (12). The tool receiver (10) includes a plurality of blades (16) substantially encased within a conical surface. A biasing member (18) biases the blades toward (16) a narrow end of the conical surface such that the (16) blades are biased in a tool engaging or operative position. The tool receiver (10) preferably includes a retaining member (26), which retains the blades within the conical surface and biases the blades radially outwardly toward the conical surface. The tool (14) may be released by overcoming the biasing force of the biasing member by moving or sliding a retaining ring (26a) or by activating a lever (38) or the like, such that no accessory wrenches or tools are required to insert or release a cutting tool or bit.
