摘要： A retortable container (10) is formed with an opening defined by a projecting rim (26). The rim includes an external surface and securing structure formed thereon. A flexible membrane (14) is sealed to the rim and closes the opening. A closure is provided having a molded plastic tubular ring (16) and a separately formed molded plastic disk (18). The tubular ring includes an overlapping flange (34) at a top and directed inwardly. The ring and the flange define an outwardly open area. The skirt includes an engagement structure for securing the closure to the external surface of the rim. The disk is separately attached on the outer surface of the ring within the open area after the retort process is applied to the sealed bottle.

The outer shell (22) and the cap (18) may be configured to cooperate with each other such that the cap (18) is operatively secured to, and mounted so as to be non-rotatable relative to, the outer shell (22). Systems for storing material and methods of closing a container and assembling a closure assembly are also provided.

The barrier shell (40) includes raised end wall (14) and sidewall (16) graphics (20, 22, 24) which extend through the outer shell (50). The outer shell (50) can include graphics (20, 22, 24) on its end wall (14) and sidewall (16) which are completed by the exposed barrier layer (40) graphics. The barrier shell (40) can be provided with an annular channel, holding the gas seal (46), for receiving a rim of the container, to lock the rim to the barrier shell (40) to prevent disengagement of the rim from the gas seal (46) during pasteurization.
