Abstract:
A group of polymers for treatment of cellulose based materials which are characterised by a functional group which binds the polymer to the material. This allows treatment of, for example cotton based fabrics, to improve, for example, their oil and water repellent properties.
Abstract:
Methods are provided for treating polyester, polyamide, acrylic, aramid or cellulosic substrates to improve the uniformity of dyeing and to improve the hydrophilic, soil-release, odor-, mildew-, bacterial- and fungal-resistant properties of these substrates.
Abstract:
There is provided a method of treating textile fibres including: a) providing a polymeric precursor including a diallyl amide cationic compound and a corresponding counter ion; b) either (i) coating the textile fibres with the polymeric precursor and polymerising the polymeric precursor to form a polymeric coating, or (ii) polymerising the polymeric precursor and contacting the polymerised polymeric precursor with the textile fibres to form a polymeric coating on the textile fibres. There is also provided a composite structure including a polymeric coating formed from the polymeric precursors of the present invention.
Abstract:
A process for manufacturing a nonwoven barrier fabric having a first face and an second opposite face, with the steps of applying a primer composition by vapor or aerosol deposition, to the first face of the fabric to form a layer of the primer composition, wherein the primer composition is essentially free of fluorinated compound, and applying a barrier composition comprising at least one unsaturated fluorinated compound by vapor or aerosol deposition to the layer of primer composition to form at least one, and preferably from one (1) to four (4), more preferably two (2) or three (2), layers of the barrier composition on the layer of primer composition and a fabric obtainable according to the process.
Abstract:
A process is disclosed for rendering shaped aramid and polybenzimidazole articles water repellent by grafting fluorinated compounds to the surface of the articles. The resulting grafted polymer and shaped articles made from the grafted polymer are also disclosed.
Abstract:
A method of making a fiber comprised of poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) having monomer groups grafted onto the fiber surface, the method comprising the steps of (i) providing a fiber of poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) that has been dried to remove adsorbed moisture, (ii) treating the fiber, in a non-polar solvent that will not dissolve the fiber, with a phosphazene base that exhibits a pKa in dimethylsulfoxide of at least 21 so as to generate anions at the amide sites on the surface of the poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) fiber, (iii) washing the base-activated fiber with an aprotic solvent, (iv) grafting a monomer onto the anion sites so as to introduce reactive functional groups onto the surface of the poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) fiber, and (v) washing the grafted fiber of step (iv) with a protic solvent to extract any residual base compounds and grafting agents that are unbound to the surface of the fibers.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a reinforcement fiber comprising a coating of epoxy resin having an epoxy backbone, wherein the epoxy resin comprises specific grafts attached to the backbone. The invention further relates to a polymer composite comprising a polymer and a reinforcement fiber of the invention. Reinforcement of polymers with fibers of the invention is enhanced by interaction of the grafts with the polymer.
