로컬 디밍(local dimming) 액정 표시 장치가 개시된다. 본 로컬 디밍 액정 표시 장치는 복수의 픽셀을 구비한 표시 패널부, 복수의 픽셀 각각을 구동하는 패널 구동부, 표시 패널부를 복수의 영역으로 구분하여 각각에 광을 조사하는 복수의 백라이트를 포함하는 백라이트부, 복수의 영역 각각에 대응되는 복수의 픽셀의 그레이 레벨(gray level) 정보에 기초하여 복수의 백라이트를 구동하는 백라이트 구동부 및 각 픽셀의 그레이 레벨에 기초하여 각 픽셀에 입사되어야 하는 제1 광량을 산출하고, 복수의 백라이트의 구동 상태에 따라 각 픽셀에 입사되는 제2 광량을 산출하여, 제1 광량 및 제2 광량의 차이에 기초하여 복수의 픽셀 중 적어도 하나의 그레이 레벨을 변경하고, 변경된 그레이 레벨에 기초하여 패널 구동부를 제어하는 프로세서를 포함한다.
Abstract:
A method and system control an OLED display to achieve desired color points and brightness levels in an array of pixels in which each pixel includes at least three sub-pixels having different colors and at least one white sub-pixel. The method and system select a plurality of reference points in the pixel content domain with known color points and brightness levels. For each set of three sub-pixels of different colors, the method and system determine the share of each sub-pixel to produce the color point and brightness level of each selected reference point, and select the maximum share determined for each sub-pixel as peak brightness needed from that sub-pixel.

A display including a color panel, an achromatic panel, a backlight, and a panel controller configured to generate color panel and achromatic panel drive values. The panels may be LCD panels. The color panel drive values dynamically compensating for variations in the color of light transmitted by the achromatic panel due to varying drive conditions of the achromatic panel. The invention includes a system, method, or controller for generating or providing color panel drive values (and optionally also achromatic panel drive values) for a dual panel display in accordance with any embodiment of the method), and optionally also storing the drive values in an look-up table, and a computer readable medium which stores code for implementing any embodiment of the method.
Abstract:
A high contrast high resolution display is produced using an image chain comprising a plurality of downstream high resolution modulators. The modulators may be illuminated by a locally dimmed backlight. Polarization control is maintained throughout the image chain via reference and analyzing polarizers combined with non-depolarizing layers. The modulators are grayscale and modulate at the sub- pixel level. A color panel may be maintained for embodiments that require color. Diffusion in the chain is matched to a resolution of the image content carried in the light such that the effects of local dimming and sub-pixel resolution are preserved. Brightness enhancement films may be utilized to enhance brightness and maintain polarization control.
