Abstract:
The invention discloses a portable and hand-held scanning device comprising an on/off button (2) mounted to the top of the housing. The user must maintain the on/off button (2) in a pressed position, or an "on" position, for the device to function for the duration of a scanning operation. The device further comprises an LCD display (23) enabling the user to view individual scan lines. The user can scroll through the scan lines by means of a thumb-wheel (24).

Abstract:
A hand-held scanner (1) is provided for reading characters from a string of characters recorded on a substrate (2). The scanner (1) may be held like a pen and moved, in contact with the substrate (2), along the string of characters. Movement of the scanner is sensed by a sensor (21). An optical system views a small area (32) of the substrate (2) and an optical detector (26) detects the relative intensity of light reflected from each of several points in the area of view (32). To facilitate tracking, a portion of the string of characters adjacent to the area of view is clearly visible to the user. The scanner includes memory for storing codes representing individual characters. The scanner may include a computer (41), connected by a cable (42), or may be self-contained and battery operated.
Abstract:
The present invention discloses imaging technology. More particularly, it relates to portable devices for providing scanned images. In one aspect, the invention provides a scanner that is able to scan a 3 to 4 inch wide area such as for scanning business cards, sales receipts, etc.
Abstract:
A hand held scanner (300) employs either uniformly or variably frosted scan windows (130', 130") to control illumination. For scanning color documents including books and magazines, a hand scanner (300) employs a fluorescent tube (305) mounted a certain distance above the lower surface of the scanner housing. At the fluorescent tube ends (305), corresponding to the illumination "dead space" of the fluorescent tube (305), the underlying portion of the scanner housing (330) is recessed towards the tube.
Abstract:
Systems, apparatuses, and methods for correcting position in a handheld image translation device are described herein. The handheld image translation device may include a position module to determine a first position of the device and a print module to deposit a printing substance on a medium adjacent to the device based at least in part on the position. The device may also include an image capture module to capture surface images of the section of the medium with printing substance deposited thereon. These surface images may be used by the position module to determine subsequent positions of the device. Other embodiments may be described and claimed.

Systems, apparatuses, and methods for a handheld image translation device are described herein. The handheld image translation device may include an image capture module to capture surface images of a medium and a positioning module to determine positioning information based at least in part on navigational measurements and/or the captured surface images. A print module of the handheld image translation device may cause print forming substances to be deposited based at least in part on the positioning information. Other embodiments may be described and claimed.

Abstract:
The present invention relates to a light pen (1) that reads data on a document. The light pen (1) is substantially round, compact and lightweight, and comprises a clip (2) such that it may be readily and securely carried in a pocket. Solid state devices (5) are arranged along the length of the light pen (1) and as it is manually traversed across a document the reading elements read each line of data. The light pen (1) is equipped with rubber rollers (6) that functions as an image alignment feature to prevent the image from skewing. In other embodiments, the light pen (1) may be equipped with spring-loaded rubber rollers that function in collaboration with the user traversing the pen (1) across a document in order to activate or de-activate the reading mechanisms.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a scanning device for scanning a document such as a photograph (101) using an image sensor device (201) that uses optics that may have a narrow depth of focus (307), the scanning avoiding contact of the document by the image sensor device during scanning. That is, the focal volume (311) of the sensor device is at a distance from the image sensor device (201). The scanning device includes a positioning mechanism (203, 204) that maintains the front surface of the document in the focal volume during scanning.
