A method and system for automatic switching between three dimensional (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) contents on a 3D display system includes determining if a received video frame content is in a 3D format or 2D format. If the received video frame is in a 2D format, then the brightness of the received video frame is adjusted and the brightness adjusted video frame is converted into a 3D format for display. If the received video frame content is in 3D format, then the received video frame is displayed after converting the received 3D video frame to a 3D format compatible with the display.

A stereoscopic image acquisition and display system is provided. The system includes a mechanism for displaying imagery either three-dimensionally or two-dimensionally. The mode of operation of the display can be selected automatically or under control of the observer, so as to avoid presenting image pairs which are not conveniently fused into a three-dimensional image by the observer. In an autostereoscopic embodiment of the system the observer's location is tracked and viewing zones are positioned to remain colocated with the eyes of the observer. If the observer moves outside the tracking range of the system, the imagery defaults to a two-dimensional presentation. The system may also include means for sensing the distance from a stereo-camera, which provides the two perspectives required for three-dimensional viewing, to the object field. When the distance to this field is less than a preset minimum, the imagery defaults to a two-dimensional presentation, to avoid parallax beyond the comfortable level.

Several implementations relate to depth map coding. In one implementation, a depth coding rate, that results from coding one or more portions of a depth map using a particular coding mode, is determined. The depth map can be used to render video for a different view than that of the depth map. A depth map distortion, that results from coding the one or more portions of the depth map using the particular coding mode, is determined. A value of distortion for the rendered video, based on the depth map distortion and on a particular relationship between the depth map distortion and values of distortion for the rendered video, is determined. It is determined whether to use the particular coding mode to code the one or more portions of the depth map, and the determination is based on the value of distortion for the rendered video and the depth coding rate.

The method further includes displaying the left image sub-frame (160) utilizing a first plurality of colors and displaying the right image sub-frame (161) utilizing a second plurality of colors. The first plurality of colors is distinct from the second plurality of colors.
