Abstract: Activated carbon (AC) produced from agglomerated purified carbonaceous product (PCP) are provided. The PCP is in particulate form, at least about 90% by volume (%v) of the particles are no greater than about 25 J.lm in diameter; the PCP has an ash content of less than about 5%m and a water content of up to about 60 %m. The PCP may be used to make AC, or utilized as an additive for production of AC from other carbonaceous feedstocks.

Abstract: Nanoporous carbon-based scaffolds or structures, and specifically carbon aerogels and their manufacture and use thereof are provided. Embodiments include a silicon-doped anode material for a lithium-ion battery, where the anode material includes beads of a polyimide-derived carbon aerogel. The carbon aerogel may further include silicon particles and accommodates expansion of the silicon particles during lithiation. The anode material provides optimal properties for use within the lithium-ion battery.

Abstract: A disaggregation method for NDs (nanodiamonds) comprising: sonicating NDs dispersed in water; and sedimenting non-disaggregated NDs by centrifugation. Optionally, the method includes sonicating the disaggregated NDs with CAN [(NH4)2Ce(NO3)6] to produce CAN modified NDs and washing to remove excess CAN. Populations of disaggregated NDs are also disclosed. In some embodiments the populations are provided as an aqueous suspension.

Abstract: An activated carbon-coated carbon black material having a nitrogen BET surface area of about 850 to 1800 m2/g, a packing density of at least 0.8 g/cc as determined at a compressive force of 500 kgf/cm2 on dry carbon powder, an electrical conductivity of a least 10 S/cm at a compressive force of 500 kgf/cm2 on dry carbon powder and electrodes and batteries comprising the carbon material. Methods for preparing such carbon materials from sugar, dextrose, oils and carbon black are described. The material is comprised of carbon black particles coated with a porous activated carbon shell.
