    Abstract: A method by which an environmental energy (e.g., wave energy) is harvested, converted into electrical power, and thereafter used to electrolyze seawater into hydrogen and chlorine gases. Those gases are recombined into hydrogen chloride from which is formed hydrochloric acid solution which is diluted and deposited at a depth sufficient to ensure its neutralization and sequestration for a significant period of time (e.g., for over a millennium). By removing chloride ions from a portion of the sea adjacent to its upper surface and depositing them into a portion of the sea more adjacent to its bottom, acidity is shifted from the surface to base of the sea, and the surface ocean is given a greater ability to absorb and buffer atmospheric carbon dioxide without a corresponding increase in acidity.

    Abstract: A device for removing ions from a solution. The device includes first and second end plates, an anion exchange membrane positioned between the first and second end plates, a first multiple of two or more first cation intercalation electrodes positioned between the first end plate and the anion exchange membrane, and one or more second intercalation electrodes positioned between the second end plate and the anion exchange membrane.     Abstract: A system for wastewater treatment with in-situ cleaning of electrodes comprises at least one reactor for treating wastewater comprising a chloride salt (sodium, potassium, calcium etc.) with a chloride concentration between 500 mg/L to 5,000 mg/L and a controller for controlling the current supplied to the reactors by controlling the electrode active area and/or the current density such that the total amount of aqueous free chlorine generated during the wastewater treatment requires the addition of an amount of sodium bisulfite determined experimentally to generate a concentration of between 500 mg/L and 5,000 mg/L of hydrochloric acid and a pH of the treated wastewater of less than or equal to 4. The wastewater is recirculated back to the reactors after the addition of sodium bisulfite in the treated wastewater. This secures an in-situ cleaning of the electrodes within the electrochemical reactors, without the need of any additional equipment.

    Abstract: Disclosed is an electrolytic water treatment system (100) with an automated cathode cleaning mechanism thereof and a method therefor. The electrolytic water treatment system (100) effectively removes scale forming minerals for large cooling towers and consumes less space. The electrolytic water treatment system (100) utilizes a shell in shell type arrangement so that both sides of anodes (18) and cathodes (16) are used for electrolysis simultaneously which makes the electrolytic water treatment system (100) highly efficient, effective and less expensive. By using the electrolytic water treatment system (100), the life of the anode (18) is increased at least two to three times compared to the polarity reversing method.

    Abstract: Electrochemical water treatment devices are disclosed. The device includes a feed inlet fluidly connectable to a source of water including dissolved silica and a chlorine-containing compound and an electrochemical separation module fluidly connectable to the feed inlet. The electrochemical separation module includes a dilution compartment, a concentration compartment, an ion exchange membrane positioned between the dilution and concentration compartment, and first and second electrodes. A first portion of a volume of the dilution compartment includes a first ion exchange media positioned proximate to the feed inlet. A second portion of the volume of the dilution compartment includes a second ion exchange media positioned distal to the feed inlet. The first ion exchange media has a greater resistance to the chlorine-containing compound than the second ion exchange media. Methods of reducing a concentration of dissolved silica in water are disclosed. Methods of facilitating treatment of water containing dissolved silica are disclosed.
