Abstract:
A spheroidal ball comprising a plurality of segments arrayed substantially parallel to one another, each segment being adjacent to at least one other segment and to no more than two other segments, adjacent segments being adjoined to one another at substantially planar interfaces, the plurality of segments including a first segment having a first thickness and a first optical modulation characteristic, a second segment having a second thickness and a second optical modulation characteristic, and a third segment having a thickness different from at least one of the first and second thicknesses and an optical modulation characteristic different from at least one of the first and second optical modulation characteristics, the ball having an anisotropy for providing an electrical dipole moment, the electrical dipole moment rendering the ball electrically responsive such that when the ball is rotatably disposed in a nonoscillating electric field while the electrical dipole moment of the ball is provided, the ball tends to rotate to an orientation in which the electrical dipole moment aligns with the field.
Abstract:
An information display apparatus is described comprising an array of staggered electromagnets (1) arranged vertically on a carriage (2). In between the carriage (2) and a mesh frame (3) are a pair of stainless steel metal shields (4) having a castellated form, the electromagnets (1) being located in recesses formed by the castellations. The mesh frame (3) supports rotatable flags (5) which have two contrasting coloured faces. To prevent stray magnetic flux from an energised electromagnet actuating a flag (5) above and/or below the intended flag (5), to be actuated a pair of castellated shields (4) is located between the electromagnets (1) and flags (5). An improved supporting mesh frame (18) comprises moulded rectangular plastics strips (9) having spaced holes (10). The strips (9) are joined by metal rods (11) which fit in the holes (10) forming a mesh support for the flags (5) which rotate about the rod (11).
Abstract:
A spatial light modulator formed of a moveable electrode (30) which is disposed opposite a fixed electrode (12) and is biased to roll in a preferred direction upon application of an electric field across the electrodes to produce a light valve or light shutter. In one embodiment, the moveable electrode is restrained at one end and coils about the fixed end in a preferential roll direction. The bias is achieved by inducing anisotropic stress or anisotropic stiffness.
Abstract:
A display apparatus with a base (1) which has a configuration of rotatable members, one face of which is a different colour or pattern to that of the base. The rotatable members are held in place relative to the base (1) so that by rotating the members contrasting faces can be adopted to enable different letters and/or numbers to be formed by the contrasting faces. The base (1) can be hingeably joined to a backing plate (2) which is adapted to be fixed in any position where the display means is to be sited. The backing plate (2) can be formed integrally with the base (1) and joined thereto by a flexible connection so that they pivot relative to each other and clip together to form a flat member a plurality of which can be fitted together to form a panel or sign board.
Abstract:
A high-resolution display has a membrane (1) into which are incorporated pivoting flaps (2) which can be individually controlled by means of a control device. The pivoting flaps (2) have two wings (5 and 6) centrally interconnected by a tapering rod (7). The rod (7) is linked to the membrane (1) by torsion bars (3 and 4) located in the axis of rotation of the pivoting flap (2) between the wings (5 and 6) in such a way that the torsion bars lie substantially within the outer perimeter of the pivoting flaps (2), so that even when long torsion bars (3 and 4) are used, pivoting flaps may be compactly arranged next to each other.
Abstract:
A display system comprises: a display panel (1) having its front surface (3) subdivided into a plurality of basic units (2), a plurality of variation units (4), each associated with one of the basic units (2), adjusting means (5) co-operating with the variation units (4). The system is characterized in that an apparent colour is associated with each of the basic units (2) and in that the strength, shade or hue of the apparent colour are variable, said variations in the strength, shade or hue of the apparent colour being obtained by continuous rotation of the variation unit (4) associated with the basic unit (2) as determined by the adjustment means (5).
Abstract:
A variable display sign (10) wherein the information to be displayed by the sign comprises one or more characters, e.g. alphanumeric characters, the or each character being composed of one or more elements selected from a predetermined array of such elements. A non-transparent fascia (15) is provided with said character elements of clear form. Each character element has associated therewith an elongate member (20) having the form of an angle bracket, the two limbs (21, 22) of the bracket having different light transmission characteristics. Mounting means mount each elongate member (20) rearwardly of its associated element to be resiliently movable between a first position in which one limb (22) is in substantial registry with said element to provide a first light transmission characteristic and a second position in which the other limb (22) is in substantial registry with said element to provide a second light transmission characteristic.
Abstract:
An electromechanical binary element is provided for uses such as display arrays. The binary element has a moveable flap having at least a conductive surface. The flap is electrostatically controllable between a position removed from a stator member having stationary electrodes, and a position overlying the stator member to modify the light reflective or transmissive character of the binary element when used as a display. The conductive surface of the flap is electrically isolated from the stationary electrodes. Stationary electrodes having a plurality of discrete conductive regions are provided to facilitate the control of elements in an array. Connection of a source of electrical potential between stationary electrode regions provides electrostatic force to attract the flap.
Abstract:
A gyricon or rotating-particle display having an auxiliary optical structure may be provided as an auxiliary optics for a twisting ball display. A gyricon or rotating-particle display may have an "eggcrate" substrate. Further, a combination of an optically transmissive dielectric fluid having a first refractive index and an optically anisotropic particle rotatably disposed in the fluid may be provided.
Abstract:
The invention pertains to an alternating matrix display with n lines and m columns of rotatable pixels with at least two differently colored display surfaces that are rotated into one of their display settings by an electric setting device controlled by a data processing device. This invention is characterized in that the pixels are arrayed in lines or columns, form n continuous line chains or m continuous column chains and with their rotational axes are aligned in a linear or columnar direction; that the continuous chains are directed by two rotatively mounted cylinders, at least one of which is driven; that the setting device has one setting element per continuous chain, and that in the run of the continuous chain in the display field the pixels are directed and held in the set display position.
