Abstract: An oropharyngeal glove (OPG) is provided for use in a rigid, or flexible bronchoscopy procedure and for anesthesia recovery. Portions of the OPG conform to portions of the patient's mouth and throat. During a bronchoscopy procedure, the bronchoscope tube passes through an opening in a proximal end of the OPG, through the OPG and through an opening in a distal end of the OPG into the patient' s trachea. A flexible body of the OPG protects the patient's mouth, throat and vocal cords from being damaged by the bronchoscope tube. A tubular extension disposed on the proximal end of the OPG provides the opening through which the bronchoscope tube first passes. Post procedure, the tubular extension can act as an airway device that connects to a ventilator machine to deliver air to the patient, thereby obviating the need to install a separate airway device to ventilate the patient during anesthesia recovery.

Abstract: The present invention relates to an intubation device (10) for inserting an endotracheal tube (24) into a patient's trachea. The intubation device (10) comprises a laryngoscope blade (18) for providing access to a pharyngeal cavity of the patient and a guide member (12) which is substantially rigid and is curved in at least a section thereof. The intubation device (10) further comprises a sled (14) configured to be coupled to the endotracheal tube (24) and to advance the endotracheal tube (24) into the trachea of the patient and a drive device configured to drive the sled (14) in an advancing direction. The sled (14) is movably coupled to the guide member (12) such that the sled (14) is translationally movable along the guide member (12) relative to the guide member (12) in the advancing direction. The present invention further relates to an intubation device for providing assistance in delivering an endotracheal tube (24) to a patient's trachea.

Abstract: An improved system and method of endobronchial imaging of lung nodules comprises the introduction of a perfluorocarbon (PFC) liquid into pulmonary passages of the lungs, the introduction of which enables better coupling between an endobronchial ultrasonic imaging system and a target tissue site within the pulmonary passages of the lungs, the improved coupling between the ultrasonic imaging system and a target tissue site being imparted by the removal (at least in part) the air interface present between the ultrasonic imaging system and the surface of the target tissue site. Furthermore, the unique properties of perfluorocarbon liquids (for example, the properties of superb biocompatibility, high affinity for dissolving oxygen, and extremely low surface tension) further position these substances to be particularly well-suited for this application.

Abstract: Methods and systems for accessing and diagnosing diseased lung compartments are disclosed.
