A forage harvester and fixed-construction row crop attachment therefor are disclosed. The attachment has three plant-receiving passages consisting of a central passage and a pair of side passages on opposite sides of the central passage. Each passage has an inner or channel section comprised of substantially parallel walls, an intermediate section or throat comprised of outwardly diverging intermediate walls and an outer section or mouth comprised of outwardly diverging outer walls. A cutter is provided in association with each of the throats or intermediate sections. Each of the intermediate walls of each side passage is constructed and arranged to define a comparatively wide cut-off area at the bottom. The cutter associated with the intermediate section or throat of each side passage is arranged adjacent its cut-off area. The comparatively wide cut-off areas and associated cutters cooperate with gathering chain sets to assure harvesting of plants having both narrow and wide row spacings. In the case of narrow row spacings the cut stalks are maintained in an upright attitude and swept rearwardly and in outboard directions from the wide cut-off areas to the relatively narrow intermediate sections whereat the gathering sets take hold of the crop. This maintenance of position and sweeping is accomplished by wall shaping and gathering set location.

A Fodder management system, method and apparatus for handling of forage crops is provided. A main frame of a row crop attachment adapted to be attached to a field traversing forage harvester having a crop inlet. An auger, mounted on the main frame generally transverse to the direction of travel of the forage harvester, comprises a tube and flighting mounted on the tube for engaging the upper portion of standing row crops as the forage harvester traverses the field. A transverse cutting assembly, mounted below the auger, has a cutting mechanism for cutting the lower portion of standing row crops. Also mounted below the auger are elements for engaging the lower portion of the stalks in cooperation with the auger flighting under conditions where the auger is rotated in a direction that urges the crop material downwardly and inwardly. After the crop is cut it is urged rearwardly by the auger toward a crop outlet in the attachment adjacent the inlet in the harvester on which the attachment is mounted.

The growth of microorganisms in stored crops, and especially in animal feedstuffs, is inhibited by the application, in the presence of urease, of a preservative composition which comprises ammonia, urea and urea polymers in a fluid medium. Urea polymers which are useful include biuret, triuret, cyanuric acid, urea cyanurate and other compounds which decompose to form ammonia. The effect of treatment with the preservative composition is to provide an immediate microorganism-inhibiting ammonia level, which, due to delayed decomposition of the urea and urea polymers, is sustained to some significant degree during prolonged storage of the treated material.

A rotary crop feed assist device mounted on a divider of a row crop harvesting header has a plurality of angularly spaced crop-engaging members projecting radially from a forwardly inclined rotational axis. The crop-engaging members are connected together at inner longitudinally-extending portions and have outer longitudinal edges which taper downwardly and inwardly toward the rotational axis. Their outer longitudinal edges sweep along a rotational path in the shape of an inverted truncated cone upon rotation of the device to impose a downward force on the crop material as it is being pulled into the discharge end of the row crop header past the feed assist device. In an modified embodiment, teeth-bearing extension members are fastened on the crop-engaging members and adjustable thereon toward and away from the rotational axis to vary the degree of exposure of the teeth in the row thereof past the outer longitudinal edges of the crop-engaging members and thereby the aggressiveness of the longitudinal edges in assisting the feeding of crop stalk material past the rotary device.

A machine for harvesting and drying a standing forage crop comprising in combination a mower, a plurality of heated rollers for receiving a flow of crop cuttings conveyed from the mower to squeeze substantial excess moisture and evaporate any remaining excess moisture above a predetermined reference moisture range so that the crop cuttings upon issuance from the heated rollers are ready for baling immediately. Moisture detecters positioned preferably before and after the heated rollers signal the moisture content of the crop cuttings to a controller. The controller can vary the temperature of the rollers or vary the residency time of the crop cuttings between the rollers or both. In the preferred embodiment the heated rollers are electrically powered induction rollers and a baler is used in combination with the machine.
