The present invention provides solutions and methods for preserving biological material that enable organs, tissues and cells to be stored for extended periods of time with minimal loss of biological activity. The inventive solutions are substantially isotonic with the biological material to be preserved and are substantially free of univalent oxyanions and of iodide. The solutions comprise a first neutral solute having a molecular weight of at least about 335 and a solubility in water of at least about 0.3M, and a second neutral solute having a molecular weight of less than about 200 and having both hydrophilic and hydrophobic moieties. The inventive solutions preferably contain CaSO.sub.4, together with combinations of anions and cations from the protein-stabilizing ends of the Hofmeister series, such as K.sub.2 SO.sub.4. In particular methods using solutions comprising raffinose or trehalose and trimethyl amine oxide or betaine, wherein the solution is substantially isotonic with the biological material and the solution is substantially free of iodide, dihydrogen phosphate, bicarbonate, nitrate and bisulfate are described.

In this formula the R.sup.1 groups are the same or different and represent methyl, ##STR2## in which n=2 or 3, m=0 to 10, p=0 to 10 and R.sup.2 is a hydrogen atom or the betaine group ##STR3## in which R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 are the same or different and represent an alkyl group with 1 to 4 carbon atoms and R.sup.5 is a divalent aliphatic hydrocarbon group with 1 to 10 carbon atoms, with the proviso that at least 0.5% of the R.sup.1 groups in the polysaccharide molecule represent the betaine group.Also disclosed is a method for the synthesis of these compounds and their use in cosmetic preparations, expecially for the care of the hair. In addition, novel compounds of the general formula ##STR4## are disclosed as intermediates in which the substituents R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 have the above meaning.

A process for selectively purifying sugar beet diffusion juice in which the raw diffusion juice is first neutralized to minimize inverted sugar formation and stabilize the colloidal content without precipitating the soluble organic acids. The neutralized diffusion juice is then subjected to high centrifugal forces to separate the colloidal and particulate content from the diffusion juice. After the colloidal and particulate solids are removed, the clarified diffusion juice is contacted with a stoichiometric equivalent or slight excess of lime based upon the soluble organic acid concentration in the diffusion juice to react with the soluble organic acids to form insoluble calcium salts of the organic acids. The insoluble calcium salts of the organic acids are then removed from the diffusion juice. The diffusion juice may be further purified as needed. The insoluble calcium salts of the organic acids are then placed in an aqueous solution such as hot water. Carbon dioxide gas or other suitable carbonate ion producing agent is dissolved in the hot water to release the organic acids and produce a calcium carbonate precipitate. The dissolved organic acids are then selectively recovered by conventional means.

The mixed compost contains 10wt% of nitrogen, 11wt% of phosphorus, and 9wt% of potassium to be applied to the pepper. The mixed compost contains 11wt% of nitrogen, 8wt% of phosphorus, and 11wt% of potassium to be applied to the Chinese cabbage.
