An array of non-volatile memory cells includes a row with N cells and M cells. In a partial-storage step, a datum is stored in a first portion of the N cells of the row. A second portion of the N cells of the row are in an “erase” state. A first error correction code associated with the datum is stored in the M cells along with a first enable bit or guard-cell which is indicative of whether the first error correction code is active. The number of M cells, adjacent to the N cells of the row, is defined on the basis of the number N of cells. In the event the datum stored in the first portion of the N cells of the row is subsequently updated or manipulated, a second error correction code associated with the updated or manipulated datum is determined and stored in the second portion of the N cells of the row along with a second guard-cell which is indicative of whether the second error correction code is active. At that point, the first guard-cell is modified to indicate that the first error correction code is not active.

An on-chip trace engine stores trace data in on-chip trace arrays and routes the trace data to output pins. An external trace capture device captures the trace data. The on-chip trace engine streams the trace data through the debug output pins at a slower rate that can be supported by external trace capture device. If compression is insufficient for the required data rate reduction, the on-chip trace engine includes selectable data reduction mechanisms. Responsive to an overflow condition, meaning trace data is captured in on-chip trace arrays faster than it can be routed off chip, the on-chip trace engine enters an overflow mode in which one or more of the data reduction mechanisms are selected. The data reduction mechanisms may include, for example, a data width reduction component, a pattern match data elimination component, a priority source select component, an under-sampling component, or various combinations thereof.

An image input/output apparatus reduces unnecessary fault management processing load and prevents a normal image input/output processing efficiency from decreasing in the way that an administrator selects an intrinsic fault that should be emphasized among individually-occurring detectable faults. To accomplish this, when a history representing a state of control is stored as log information in a first storage, a fault is detected, and an occurrence frequency of the detected fault is stored in a second storage in a way that associates the fault occurrence frequency with the fault. One or more thresholds of the fault occurrence frequency are enabled to be set, and it is judged whether the fault occurrence frequency is equal to or larger than the threshold. Based on a result of the judgment, a log management unit controls storage setting of the log information associated with the fault into the first storage.

A method of data placement and control in a block-divided distributed disk array is provided. At first, data to store is divided into logical blocks, and each of the divided logical blocks is further divided into a plurality of data blocks. Then, a parity block is created through performing an XOR operation on the data blocks of each logical block in a unit of a strip, and the parity block is arranged at the first block of a strip unit. Then, parity blocks are arranged at a next block of a previous logical block's the last data block through a left/right shifting for uniformly arranging the parity blocks through out all disks in order to fill an empty block between the logical blocks.

A system and method for enhancing passwords, access codes, and personal identification munbers by making them pace, rhythm, or tempo sensitive. The password includes a sequence of characters and an associated timing element. To access a restricted device or funcion a user enters the correct character sequence according to the correct pace, rhythm, or tempo. The entered sequence and timing elementare compared with stored values and access is granted only if the entered and stored values match. In an alternative embodiment the stored timing element is set, and periodically altered, by a computer or program without consent from the user and visual, auditory, and/or tactile prompts indicate the correct timing element to the user during the authentication process. The meaning of the prompts are provided to the user in advance.

A system abstraction layer enables selection from among at least two different processor abstraction layer components. By allowing the selection from a plurality of compressed components, better system adaptability may be achieved. For example, updates may be provided so that it is not necessary to update the entire basic input/output system each time a component of the processor abstraction layer needs to be updated. In addition, a variety of different platforms may be supported by one basic input/output system having a plurality of selectable processor abstraction layer component images.

A computer implemented method, apparatus, and computer usable program code for managing real memory. In response to a request for a page to be moved into real memory, a contiguous range of real memory is reserved for the page corresponding to a contiguous virtual memory range to form a reservation within a plurality of reservations for the real memory. This reservation enables efficient promotion of pages to a larger page size. The page only occupies a portion of the contiguous range of real memory for the reservation. In response to a need for real memory, a selected reservation is released within the plurality of reservations based on an age of the selected reservation within the plurality of reservations.

A disk array apparatus capable of effecting saving and operation of data through a simple construction. When a host computer sets “write inhibit” or “read/write inhibit” for an LDEV which is set on a first storage device, this setting is registered in an access attribute management table and is also reflected onto a migration management table. A migration control program moves the LDEV for which access limitation has been set to a lower-speed (lower-performance) second storage device or to an external storage device. When the access limitation is released, the moved LDEV is restored to the first storage device from the storage device to which the LDEV has been moved. By performing migration control in interlocking relation to control of access attributes, it is possible to obtain a simple data saving function and data management function.
