Pumping units are known to have an inlet channel, opening out into a pumping channel and tapering from an inlet cross section to an outlet into the pumping channel with an outlet cross-section. The flow is deflected through ninety degrees on entry to the pumping channel which induces strong swirling. The transition from the inlet channel into the pumping channel is not optimal for flow. This effect reduces the efficiency of the pumping unit. The inlet flow into the pumping channel is improved in the pumping unit according to the invention and hence efficiency is improved. According to the invention, the outlet is essentially provided in a first quadrant with relation to the inlet cross section and the tapering of the inlet channel essentially occurs in the other three quadrants. A biomimetic system for mitigating marine bio-fouling is disclosed which is based upon the sacrificial skin mechanism found in the pilot whale species. The anti-bio-fouling system is characterized by the continuous in-situ underwater formation of a conformal protective skin around a submerged object or structure and employs a circulatory system embedded in a diffuser layer conformably fitted and secured to the structure to controllably deliver a sacrificial skin-forming material to the structural surface. The system advantageously utilizes the unique chemical properties of the skin-forming material to alter the material's viscosity in response to contact with sea water such that the material is uniformly distributed over the structure surface by a self-diffusion process, notwithstanding structural configuration or gravitational orientation, thus forming a stabilized waterproof layer or sacrificial skin. The sacrificial skin controllably self-dissolves and is shed in response to continuous contact with sea water, thereby carrying away the marine bio-fouling material.

A refrigerant system is provided with at least two stages of compression connected in series. An intercooler is positioned intermediate the two stages and is cooled by an indoor air stream. The intercooler is positioned to be in a path of air flow passing over an indoor heat exchanger, and preferably downstream of the indoor heat exchanger, in relation to this airflow. The intercooler cools the refrigerant flowing between the two compression stages as well as provides the reheat function. Benefits with regard to system performance (efficiency, capacity and reliability) are achieved with no additional circuitry or components required to provide the intercooler and reheat functions. This invention is particularly important for the CO2 refrigerant systems operating in the transcritical cycle. Methods of control are presented for both the intercooler and reheat functions.

According to one aspect, the subject application involves a method of controlling a transition of a gas turbine. The method includes receiving a request of the gas turbine to drive an increased load. The increased load is greater than a load being driven by the gas turbine when the request is received. The method further includes determining that a temperature of a fuel to be ignited within a combustor of the gas turbine is less than a target temperature of the fuel to be introduced into the combustor for driving the increased load. Responsive to this determination, the method also includes controlling introduction of an additive into the combustor of the gas turbine when the temperature of the fuel is less than the target temperature to establish a suitable Wobbe Index of a fuel combination to promote a substantially continuous transition of the gas turbine to drive the increased load, wherein the fuel combination includes the fuel and the additive.

A method for the application and/or renewal of a protection for a thermal barrier coating system of a heat engine involves a thermal barrier coating system that includes a bond coat layer (2) and a thermal barrier coating layer (3) of porous structure (4), wherein the bond coat layer (2) is located between and in contact with a base metal (1) of a heat engine component and with the thermal barrier coating layer (3) and bonds the thermal barrier coating layer (3) to the base metal (1). At least one substance is applied inside the engine as a liquid or carried by a liquid by spraying and/or by flowing it across a hot gas exposed surface (9) of the barrier coating layer (3) of the heat engine component mounted within the heat engine in the assembled state prior to the initial start-up of the engine, before the first operation interval, or during a washing cycle of the thermal engine and/or at the end of an operation interval, before a subsequent operation interval, wherein the substance covers and/or at least partly penetrates into the porous structure (4), and concomitantly or subsequently hardens to remain within the pores (4) and/or on the upper surface (9) of the thermal barrier coating layer. Preferably, but not necessarily, for the application, the turbine washing equipment of the engine is used.

A cluster of thrust rods are disposed in a module oriented to extend somewhat beyond the surface of a road or trackway adapted to receive vehicular traffic thereon, the thrust rod fastened to reciprocate in the presence of vehicular traffic and spring biased to return the thrust rod to an original, unstressed position. Each deflection of an associated thrust rod causes a fluid contained within a hydraulic piston/cylinder to be pulsed in response to pressure formed from a piston associated with the thrust rod, the thrust rod operating against spring tensioning to return to its unstressed state. Each fluid pulse is allowed to communicate through a single fluidic line to a second piston/cylinder arrangement having reduced cross section for a pulse of greater intensity and deflection, and spring biased to return to an original, unstressed position simultaneously with the thrust rod. This piston cylinder arrangement is provided with double sided piston surfaces one surface remote from the single fluidic line fluid. The remote surface deflection communicates with a pump/manifold system communicating with a reservoir executing its fluid to travel in a fluid conduit past a turbine and generator arrangement or a similar instrumentality for the useful output associated with a liquid impinging against the turbine's blades. Tailwater from the turbine flows to a reservoir to be reinitialized.

Desulfation methods for an exhaust treatment system having a fuel reformer configured upstream of a LNT. Reductant is injected upstream of the fuel reformer. The reductant reacts within the reformer to generate heat, but the system is configured for some reductant to breakthrough and react in the LNT to generate further heat. This configuration allows the LNT to operate at temperatures higher the than first device and facilitates independent control of the LNT and first device temperatures.

A wrapping apparatus, system, station and/or process is generally provided. As to the apparatus, it includes a wrap bar for engaging and directing a wrapper about the product, a wrap bar carrier from which the wrap bar extends, and a drive assembly operatively linked to the wrap bar carrier. The carrier block, which translatingly retains the carrier intermediate opposing end portions thereof, is adapted for driven rotation about a wrapping axis of the apparatus so as to thereby rotatingly drive the bar about the axis via rotation of the carrier. The drive assembly, which is operatively linked to the carrier, selectively translates the carrier in relation to the carrier block during driven rotation of the carrier such that a radial distance for the bar from the axis is thereby capable of selective establishment in furtherance of delimiting a wrap bar travel path commensurate with the product profile of the product.

In an embodiment, a unitized overhead glazing system of the present invention includes an array of assembled structural framing cassettes each having at least five photovoltaic modules. In an embodiment, each cassette forms one electrical string and is pre-wired, tested, and shipped ready to install for a variety of applications, including, but not limited to, parking canopies, covered walkways and specialty awnings. The unitized overhead glazing system can be utilized to generate electricity, provide shade, collect water, reduce heat island effect, provide more controlled lighting and support infrastructure for plug-in vehicles. The unitized overhead glazing system is designed to be installed and maintained from below, eliminating safety concerns associated with conventional canopies where work must be performed while on top of the canopy. The unitized overhead glazing system incorporates sealing methods and components to manage water, limit debris build up, and maximize energy yield.
