The method of carbo-nitriding alumina surfaces is a process for applying a carbo-nitride coating to an alumina or alumina-based composite surface. The method involves the step of applying a phenolic resin to the alumina surface in a thin, uniform film. The resin-coated alumina surface is maintained in a controlled chamber at about 8 bar pressure at a temperature of about 175° C. for about 2 hours. The surface is then heated at about 400° C. for several hours in an argon atmosphere. This converts the phenolic resin to carbon. A method of removing a target from a biological sample which involves placing a transfer surface in contact with the biological sample, and then focally altering the transfer surface to allow selective separation of the target from the biological sample. In disclosed embodiments, the target is a cell or cellular component of a tissue section and the transfer surface is a film that can be focally altered to adhere the target to the transfer surface. Subsequent separation of the film from the tissue section selectively removes the adhered target from the tissue section. The transfer surface is activated from within the target to adhere the target to the transfer surface, for example by heating the target to adhere it to a thermoplastic transfer surface. Such in situ activation can be achieved by exposing the biological sample to an immunoreagent that specifically binds to the target (or a component of the target). The immunoreagent can alter the transfer surface directly (for example with a heat generating enzyme carried by the immunoreagent), or indirectly (for example by changing a characteristic of the target). In some embodiments, the immunoreagent deposits a precipitate in the target that increases its light absorption relative to surrounding tissue, such that the biological specimen can be exposed to light to selectively heat the target. Alternatively, the immunoreagent is an immunofluorescent agent that carries a fluorophore that absorbs light and emits heat.

In order to remove fluorine from a zinc containing solution before zinc electro-refining in lower cost, fluorine is removed by adsorption from a zinc containing solution (leached solution) utilizing the character of the predetermined iron compound or zinc compound which can adsorb fluorine in an acid solution and desorb fluorine in an alkaline solution. The fluorine adsorbent/desorbent having adsorbed fluorine is treated in an alkaline solution, to desorb the fluorine. This makes it possible to regenerate the fluorine adsorbent/desorbent. Further, an electrolytic solution for zinc electro-refining can be prepared in lower cost, thus total zinc refining costs can be reduced.

A PhotoDynamic Therapy (PDT) method is presented for cosmetic rejuvenation, which is exemplified by a two phase approach for treating facial and neck skin aging while minimizing damage to the underlying region of skin being treated. To obtain best results a combination of treatments are used. This includes applying photosensitizer and light energy for stimulating the collagen within the skin, thereby restoring the elasticity of skin. The treatment procedures take about six weeks consisting of impair (damage) and repair (recovery) sessions involving skin preparation by peeling, skin detoxification, application and distribution of photosensitizer to the skin, irradiation of pre-sensitized skin followed by removal of mask. Results of long lasting improvement, especially in comparison with most cosmetic treatments, are obtained upon completion of the series, with marked changes being observed after individual sessions, which provide added incentive to complete a treatment program. These results eliminate the need for repetitive treatments after the six week series, unlike most current approaches which require repeat sessions semi-annually or annually.

In aligning ends of optical fibers, e.g. ends of large mode area double-clad fibers (LMA-DCFs), in a fiber optic fusion splicer the best position of the object plane of the optical system for observing images of the cores of the fiber ends are first determined by maximizing the contrast of the core image, in particular the core image peak in intensity profiles. The alignment process may be performed by adjusting the offset distance between the observed cores in some suitable way, e.g. by using a cascade technique. In e.g. a process for prealigning the fiber ends the self-focusing effect of optical fibers can be used to first determine the best object plane position for observing the self-focusing effect and then the very pre-alignment operation can be performed. This may extend the range of image analysis allowing e.g. that alignment, in particular core alignment, can be performed without requiring direct information showing the position of sides or edges of the claddings in captured pictures.

The invention relates to a method for thermally initiated triggering of an aerosol fire extinguisher having a strike pin (6) acted upon by an inner spring (7) and locked in the stand-by state, and after thermal initiation, the lock is removed and the strike pin (6), driven by the force of the inner spring (7), strikes against a mechanical firing cap (1), whereby an initial firing material is released in the firing cap (1), igniting a booster charge (2), the hot conversion gas thereof igniting a pyrotechnic extinguisher charge in the aerosol fire extinguisher. In order that an absolutely reliable initiation takes place under the same conditions throughout the entire service life of the aerosol fire extinguisher, it is proposed that only immediately after the thermal initiation, when the firing pin (6) is still locked, the inner spring (7) is brought to the necessary tension for triggering the firing cap (1), and only after reaching said tension is the lock of the firing pin (6) automatically released.

A method of actuating multiple valves in a well can include applying one or more pressure cycles to the valves without causing actuation of any of the valves, and then reducing pressure applied to the valves, thereby resetting a pressure cycle-responsive actuator of each valve. A pressure cycle-operated valve for use in a well can include a closure member, a piston which displaces in response to pressure applied to the valve, and a ratchet mechanism which controls relative displacement between the piston and the closure member. The ratchet mechanism may permit relative displacement while one or more pressure cycles are applied to the valve, and the ratchet mechanism may prevent relative displacement in response to a pressure sequence of: a) a reduction in pressure applied to the valve, b) a predetermined number of pressure cycles applied to the valve, and c) an increase in pressure applied to the valve.

A process for recovering hydrocarbons from an in situ formation. The process includes the steps of injecting steam though an injection well into an underground extraction chamber having a hydrocarbon extraction interface, warming the hydrocarbons at the extraction interface to cause the hydrocarbons to flow downwardly by gravity drainage and to release dissolved hydrocarbon gases and moving the hydrocarbon gases from the extraction interface to improve heat transfer from said steam to said interface. The last step is to recover liquids such as hydrocarbons and water through a production well. The invention provides adding a buoyancy modifying agent to the steam to cause the hydrocarbon gases to accumulate in the well in a preferred location. The preferred location is at the top of the chamber where the gases protect the top of the chamber from being extracted to the point of breakthrough.

An active cooling assembly is described. One embodiment of the active cooling assembly includes a fin configured to enable convective heat transfer to an airflow passing over the fin. A boundary layer accumulates between the fin and the airflow, and the boundary layer includes a region of heated air attached to a side of the fin. The embodiment also includes a blade configured to oscillate proximate to the fin to shear the boundary layer that accumulates between the fin and the airflow. The region of heated air is sheared from the side of the fin so that the impedance attributable to the boundary layer of the convective heat transfer from the fin to the airflow is reduced. The fin is coupled to a stationary arm, and the blade is coupled to a swing arm. The swing arm and a spring are driven at a resonant frequency by an actuator.
