Systems and methods described herein utilize a distributed server network to allow for the real-time distribution of copies of a data stream uploaded from a computing device. The uploaded data stream corresponds to an environment surrounding a user (exam taker) of the computing device during execution of a testing routine for an examination. Providing copies of the data stream in real-time allows proctors as well as other test assessment authorities to ‘peek in’ on the exam taker's environment during the exam. As a result, the environment surrounding the exam taker can be monitored in real-time to determine whether any visual or audio activity in the environment constitutes activity not in accordance with the exam protocol. Following an affirmative determination that the exam taker violated an exam taking protocol, a proctor or other test assessment authority can then make a final or early decision regarding disciplinary action.

A method begins by a dispersed storage (DS) processing module generating a temporary public-private key pair, a restricted use certificate, and a temporary password for a device. The method continues with the DS processing encoding a temporary private key to produce a set of encoded private key shares and encoding the restricted use certificate to produce a set of encoded certificate shares. The method continues with the DS processing module outputting the set of encoded private key shares and the set of encoded certificate shares to a set of authentication units. The method continues with the DS processing module outputting the temporary password to the device such that, when the device retrieves the set of encoded private key shares and the set of encoded certificate shares, the device is able to recapture the temporary private key and the restricted use certificate for accessing a dispersed storage network (DSN).

Techniques are described herein which minimize the impact of virtual machine snapshots on the performance virtual machines and hypervisors. In the context of a volume snapshot which may involve (i) taking virtual machine snapshots of all virtual machines associated with the volume, (ii) taking the volume snapshot, and (iii) removing all the virtual machine snapshots, the virtual machine snapshots may be created in a first order and removed in a second order. Specifically, snapshots for busy virtual machines (i.e., virtual machines with higher disk write activity) may be created last and removed first. Consequently, snapshots of busy virtual machines are retained for the shorter periods of time, thereby minimizing the effect of virtual machine snapshots on those virtual machines (and their associated hypervisors) that would be most negatively impacted by virtual machine snapshots.

A computing device may split a translation table used when performing a DMA operation into two different translation tables. To split the translation table, the computing device may update the registers in the IOMMU to include pointers to the two different translation tables. For example, the IOMMU may update one register to point to the same starting address as the original translation table but assign a shorter length (i.e., fewer entries) to that table. The extra entries may then be used to form the other translation table by adding a new pointer to one of the IOMMU registers. The two translation tables may be owned by the same service provider or two different service providers. Alternatively, the computing device may assign the two tables to the same service provider which in turn assigns the tables to respective client devices executed by the service provider.

Inoperable phase change memory (PCM) blocks in a PCM device are remapped to one or more operable PCM blocks, e.g. by maintaining an inoperable block table that includes an entry for each inoperable PCM block and an address of a remapped PCM block. Alternatively, the PCM blocks may be remapped by storing the address of the remapped block in the block itself, and setting a remapping bit that indicate the block has been remapped. Where the remapping is performed by a processor, an inoperable block bit may be set in a translation look aside buffer that indicates whether a virtual memory page is associated with an inoperable or remapped PCM block. When a request to access a virtual memory page is received, the processor references the inoperable block bit associated with the virtual memory page to determine whether to check for remapped PCM blocks in the inoperable block table.

A scheme referred to as a “Region-based cache restoration prefetcher” (RECAP) is employed for cache preloading on a partition or a context switch. The RECAP exploits spatial locality to provide a bandwidth-efficient prefetcher to reduce the “cold” cache effect caused by multiprogrammed virtualization. The RECAP groups cache blocks into coarse-grain regions of memory, and predicts which regions contain useful blocks that should be prefetched the next time the current virtual machine executes. Based on these predictions, and using a simple compression technique that also exploits spatial locality, the RECAP provides a robust prefetcher that improves performance without excessive bandwidth overhead or slowdown.

Activity-based sampling provides useful and relevantly focused diagnostic data, connected to improve a developer's understanding. An application invokes log-event procedures, causing a logger to check logging conditions and make a log entry when a logging condition is satisfied. The logger has a set of log-enabled activities, and one or more start-events with respective sampling frequency conditions. One logging condition is that a current activity-id be log-enabled. Another states that if the current activity-id is not log-enabled but the log-event procedure identifies a start-event consistent with the sampling frequency condition, the activity is log-enabled and a log entry is made. Creation of a child activity by a parent activity which is in the set of log-enabled activities is noted in the log, and the child is automatically log-enabled. A log consumer may reside inside or outside the application. Event Tracing for Windows services can be enhanced to support activity-based sampling.

In the field of computing, many scenarios involve the execution of an application within a virtual environment (e.g., web applications executing within a web browser). In order to perform background processing, such applications may invoke worker processes within the virtual environment; however, this configuration couples the life cycle of worker processes to the life cycle of the application and/or virtual environment. Presented herein are techniques for executing worker processes outside of the virtual environment and independently of the life cycle of the application, such that background computation may persist after the application and/or virtual environment are terminated and even after a computing environment restart, and for notifying the application upon the worker process achieving an execution event (e.g., detecting device events even while the application is not executing). Such techniques may heighten the resiliency and persistence of worker processes and expand the capabilities of applications executing within virtual environments.
