An exemplary aspect relates generally to graphics processing systems and more specifically relates to executing vertex and fragment shading operations to a pixel blender device. The technology is at least applicable to graphics processing systems in which vertex and fragment shading operations are executed by dedicated fragment and vertex units or by unified shading units. The graphics processing unit driver is responsible to determine if a shading operation can be assigned to a multi-threaded, multi-format pixel blender. Based on the determination, the fragment shading operations or the vertex shading operations or both are assigned to the pixel blender for execution; the execution of the fragment and/or vertex shading operations by the shader unit(s) is skipped. The determination is based on a code analysis. Forwarding shading operations from the fragment and vertex shaders, i.e., bypassing the shading units, to a programmable, multi-threaded and multi-format pixel blender may save electrical power consumption because a programmable, multi-threaded, and multi-format pixel blender is a less complex circuit compared to a fragment or a vertex or a unified shading unit.

Robust techniques for self-calibration of a moving camera observing a planar scene. Plane-based self-calibration techniques may take as input the homographies between images estimated from point correspondences and provide an estimate of the focal lengths of all the cameras. A plane-based self-calibration technique may be based on the enumeration of the inherently bounded space of the focal lengths. Each sample of the search space defines a plane in the 3D space and in turn produces a tentative Euclidean reconstruction of all the cameras that is then scored. The sample with the best score is chosen and the final focal lengths and camera motions are computed. Variations on this technique handle both constant focal length cases and varying focal length cases.

A data storage system, according to certain aspects, automatically backs up source data when the replication data is faulty. For instance, the system performs data backup using replication data rather than source data to reduce the processing load on the source system. The backup data is then associated with the source data as if the backup had been performed on the source data. If the replication system fails, then backing up replication data results in backup data that does not accurately reflect the source data. When permitted by the user system configuration, the system automatically backs up source data when replication has failed.

In the step of curing a resin for bonding a TFT substrate and a counter substrate each having an alignment film that has been optically aligned by using UV-light, damage to the alignment film due to the UV-light can be prevented without using a light shielding mask. In a heat pump apparatus, switching between high efficiency operation, and high capacity operation, is performed according to the state of the load. A main refrigerant circuit uses an ejector. A first sub-refrigerant circuit connects a portion between a heat exchanger and an ejector to a portion between a gas-liquid separator and a heat exchanger A second sub-refrigerant circuit connects a portion between the heat exchanger and the ejector to an injection pipe of a compressor. When the load is medium, refrigerant is circulated in the main refrigerant circuit to perform an efficient ejector aided operation. When the load is large, a high capacity injection operation is performed by flowing refrigerant to the second sub-refrigerant circuit. When the load is small, a simple bypass operation prevents degradation of efficiency by flowing refrigerant to the first sub-refrigerant circuit.

A vertical-axis wind turbine system includes a novel wind turbine having helical shaped blades with serrated edges that exhibit unique airfoil characteristics. Such innovative designs of blades improve the efficiency of the turbine. Airfoil characteristics of such blades make it effective at lower wind speeds than conventional wind turbines. The exemplary system is expandable for more efficiency when the number of turns in the helical shape of blades is increased. Such a design of blades in a wind turbine generate airflow and drag in the upward direction affecting other wind turbine(s) located vertically above in close proximity. This system is modularized with many smaller wind turbines sharing the same vertical axis arranged one above another in close proximity to each other. Such an incremental design of modularized wind turbines is uniquely used to scale up for increased power generation needs.

Various methods and data structures for managing transition between different firing fractions during skip fire operation of an engine are described. In some embodiments, transitions are constrained to occur when firing sequence segments of a designated length are shared by the first and second firing fractions. In a separate aspect, a data structure that uses current firing fraction phase as a first index and a target firing fraction as a second index may be used to determine a phase of the target firing fraction to enter at a transition. Is some circumstances transitions between a current and target firing fraction may be conducted as a series of steps through intermediate firing fractions.
