A switchable bias current biases, in an operational state, a differential amplifier with a full-slew bias current. A system on/off signal transitions from an operational state to a power-down state. The transition disables the differential amplifier and switches the switchable bias current to a reduced slew bias current. The system on/off signal transitions from the power-down state to the operational state, the differential amplifier is enabled, and the switchable bias current is delayed, by a reduced slew duration, from switching to the full-slew bias current. The enabled differential amplifier slews toward a reference voltage at a reduced slew rate caused by the reduced slew bias current. The switchable bias current, after the reduced slew duration, switches to the full-slew bias current. Optionally, a regulated pass gate is disabled in response to the system on/off signal transitioning from the operational state to the power-down state.

We propose a procedure for the determination of lactic acid or lactate in biological fluids, which is simple and low cost with respect to the known methodologies. This procedure can be used by unskilled personnel and it can be implemented in disposable test strips and portable measure devices. The procedure is based on the photochemical reaction of lactic acid with Fe(III), which is reduced to Fe(II) when irradiated with UV light. The Fe(II), produced proportionally to the amount of lactate in the sample, is determined electrochemically or using its reaction with a colored complexing agent, such as 1,10-phenanthroline, and determined by spectrophotometry. This method is advantageous both for the low cost of the reagents employed, and for their short and long term stability.

Hard-material, flat-surfaced workpieces such as semiconductor wafers or sapphire disks are attached with vacuum to the flexible elastomeric membrane of a wafer carrier that allows one surface of the workpiece to be in conformal abrading contact with a moving flat-surfaced abrasive. The elastomeric membrane external wafer attachment surface has a pattern of recessed vacuum grooves and vacuum is supplied to the grooves to firmly attach the rigid-material silicon wafer in flat-surfaced contact with the membrane. The attached wafer seals the vacuum grooves and also provides lateral stiffness to the center portion of the membrane. An outer annular extension of the flexible elastomer membrane maintains the wafer at its original membrane-centered location when abrading forces are applied to the rotating wafer. The rotating wafer peripheral edge does not contact a rigid retaining ring during a wafer polishing procedure. Fixed-abrasive disks or raised-island abrasive disks are attached to a rotatable flat-surfaced platen.

The present invention is directed to an expandable spinal fusion intervertebral implant and a method for surgically implanting said implant that provides for maintaining and creating lordosis in the human spine that can be filled with biologics while in situ to encourage spinal fusion. A threaded rod that traverses an insertion/injection handle can be rotated to operate a screw within the interbody cage that displaces opposing vertical tapped sliding wedges, causing them to converge towards each other. Such contact causes the operation of a horizontal wedge that acts as a lift to expand the interbody cage to one of various dimensions in a preferred range. In its expanded height, the overall length of the interbody cage is maintained. At its desired expansion, the spinal fusion implant of the present invention is sized to fit within the disc space between two vertebral bodies and fill all voids left while the vertical and horizontal wedges operate within, due to the biologics being contained within the interbody cage.
