The resonant frequency of a reactive circuit is determined in situ by determining phase angle differences between an A.C. driving voltage applied to a transformer primary winding and an induced alternating current in the transformer secondary winding. The phase angle is determined indirectly by detecting when the driving voltage applied to the primary changes its polarity and when an induced current in the secondary changes its polarity. The time difference between those polarity changes indicates whether the voltage leads or lags the current or is in phase. A driving voltage frequency is adjusted in real time until the phase angle differences disappear. A duty cycle of the driving signal applied to the primary is also adjusted to change the voltage induced in the secondary winding. The duty cycle is adjusted by changing either a phase of primary driving voltages or the duty cycle of primary driving voltages.

This invention encompasses embodiments for multi-modal integrated simultaneous measurement of various aspects of fluids contained in circulating systems such as automotive reciprocating engines and vehicle transmissions. These circulating systems perform constant internal lubrication, and heat and contaminant removal to protect the internal moving parts from the inherent friction and damage in normal operation. Most commonly this is achieved with fluids based on hydrocarbon and/or related synthetics, which, over time, can lose their protective properties, and vary in their performance or breakdown/decay due to internal and external events. Several components within the lubricant fluid can be measured and can provide insight into the efficacy of the system to perform its designed mission. Described herein is a real-time, simultaneous, integrated, multi-modal sensor system for early warning notification that can be further enhanced using specifically designed nanoparticles that can be introduced into the system, engineered to specifically bind with the contaminants and/or undergo an irreversible state change upon certain experienced conditions to both increase the detectability as well as provide for a framework to improve filter performance.

A relief valve having a crenelated exhaust ring surrounding the poppet. The crenelated exhaust ring comprises a series of alternating crenels and merlons which together define an increasing cross-sectional exhaust area circumferentially about the poppet during cracking (i.e., once the pressure in the inflatable device exceeds the cracking pressure) as the poppet rises in the relief valve in response to increased pressures and, conversely, a decreasing cross-sectional exhaust area about the poppet during closing as the poppet lowers to its re-seated, sealed position. The design of the crenels in the form of a larger upper cross-sectional area to a smaller lower cross-sectional opening, advantageously achieves a reseating pressure that is substantially equal to or slightly less than the cracking pressure while minimizing possible oscillations during re-seating of the poppet. The crenelated exhaust ring surrounding the poppet advantageously results in a relief valve having a higher flow rate at a given back pressure than would be achieved without the crenelated exhaust ring surrounding the poppet.

A fuel supply device (1) has a valve (13) in a fuel passage between a fuel pump (3) and an engine (5). In a storage portion of an ECU (18-21) is stored a relationship between a fuel pressure and a flow rate, which are required by the engine, and voltage which is supplied to a motor (7). The ECU senses voltages V26, V27, V28 supplied to the motor from a controller (22) when the valve is opened from change points C1′, C2′, C3′ at which a characteristic between the voltage and the current which are supplied to the motor (7) is changed. Then, the ECU corrects the voltage stored in the storage portion on the basis of differences between voltages V1, V2, V5 stored in the storage portion at the change points C1, C2, C3 and the voltages V26, V27, V28 when the valve is opened. In this way, the fuel supply device can correctly control the motor in correspondence to the fuel pressure and the flow rate which are required by the engine.

The vast differentiation potential of human embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells, including their potential to cascade through all of the somatic cell lineages and to display the complete transcriptional regulatory network of human biology, has generated interest in deriving scalable, purified, and identified cell types and methods of discovering the precise structure of the human regulatory network. However, the innate capacity of pluripotent cells to display all these lineages is not necessarily reflected during their culture in vitro. The clonal isolation and propagation of progenitors greatly facilitates the generation of highly purified and identified formulations for research and therapeutic purposes. Nevertheless, other cell types have yet to be isolated and propagated from normal cells and methods of isolating said novel cell types as well as methods for introducing perturbations into the transcriptional regulatory network in order to construct a computer model of the entire human transcriptional regulatory network would greatly benefit basic research as well as manufacturing technology for cell-based therapies.

Polypeptide particles of the present invention are particles of a polypeptide derived from spider silk proteins, and have an average particle size of 1000 nm or less. A method for producing polypeptide particles of the present invention includes: a solution production step in which the polypeptide is dissolved in at least one solvent selected from the group consisting of DMSO, DMF, and these with an inorganic salt, so as to obtain a solution of the polypeptide; a step in which the solution produced in the solution production step is substituted with a water-soluble solvent so as to obtain an aqueous solution of the polypeptide; and a step in which the aqueous solution of the polypeptide is dried. Thereby, the present invention provides polypeptide particles suitable for application to a living body and capable of being applied to cosmetics, etc., while identifying the properties of the polypeptide particles, and a method for producing the same.
