A photonically-sampled electronically-quantized analog-to-digital converter generates an optical signal comprising a series of optical pulses. The optical signal is split into a first and a second optical path. The split optical signal is detected in the first path and then the detected optical signal is converted to a reference digital signal. The split optical signal in the second path is modulated with an input RF signal and a plurality of demultiplexed RF-modulated optically-sampled signals is generated from the modulated optical signal. The plurality of demultiplexed RF-modulated optically-sampled signals is then pulse broadened, detected, and converted to a plurality of sampled-RF digital signals. The reference digital signal and the plurality of sampled-RF digital signals are digital signal processed to generate a digital representation of the input RF signal.

Aspects of this disclosure concern controllers and control methods for applying a drive voltage to bus bars of optically switchable devices such as electrochromic devices. Such devices are often provided on windows such as architectural glass. In certain embodiments, the applied drive voltage is controlled in a manner that efficiently drives an optical transition over the entire surface of the electrochromic device. The drive voltage is controlled to account for differences in effective voltage experienced in regions between the bus bars and regions proximate the bus bars. Regions near the bus bars experience the highest effective voltage. In some cases, feedback may be used to monitor an optical transition. In these or other cases, a group of optically switchable devices may transition together over a particular duration to achieve approximately uniform tint states over time during the transition.

Conventional approaches to integrating waveguides within standard electronic processes typically involve using a dielectric layer, such as polysilicon, single-crystalline silicon, or silicon nitride, within the in-foundry process or depositing and patterning a dielectric layer in the backend as a post-foundry process. In the present approach, the back-end of the silicon handle is etched away after in-foundry processing to expose voids or trenches defined using standard in-foundry processing (e.g., complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) processing). Depositing dielectric material into a void or trench yields an optical waveguide integrated within the front-end of the wafer. For example, a shallow trench isolation (STI) layer formed in-foundry may serve as a high-resolution patterning waveguide template in a damascene process within the front end of a die or wafer. Filling the trench with a high-index dielectric material yields a waveguide that can guide visible and/or infrared light, depending on the waveguide's dimensions and refractive index contrast.

A circuit and method for gradually reducing a coil current during a shutdown period is disclosed. The circuit and method include a controller that is configured in a control loop with a current sensor that measures the current in the coil and a transistor that can be controller to limit the current in the coil. The open-loop gain of the controller is determined by a resistance of a variable feedback resistor, and the resistance of the variable feedback resistor is reduced during the shutdown period as the coil current becomes small. The reduction of the resistance maintains a suitable phase margin by lowering the open loop gain of the circuit for low coil currents. Thus during shutdown, the circuit provides control accuracy for high coil currents and control stability for low coil currents.

Capsules with a cement additive covered by a polymeric outer shell are added to wellbore cement. The additive is released from the shells by osmosis or shell ruptures. Capillary forces draw the additive into micro-annuli or cracks present in the cement, where the additive seals the micro-annuli and cracks to define a self-sealing material. Root orientation, or angle, is an important component of root architecture and depth of the root system. We have determined that DRO1 and DRO1-related genes are present across diverse plant phyla and fall within the IGT gene family. DRO1, present in both Arabidopsis and peach, displayed root specific expression patterns. AtDRO1 is predominantly expressed in both the root vasculature and root tips in a distinct developmental pattern. Mutation of AtDRO1 led to more horizontal lateral root angles; over-expression of AtDRO1 under a constitutive promoter reduced lateral root angles and resulted in shoot phenotypes including upward leaf curling, shortened siliques, and narrow lateral branch angles. Over-expression of PpeDRO1 in plum (Prunus domestica) led to deeper rooting phenotypes. These data establish that DRO1-related genes serve a role in altering root architecture, providing a method for drought avoidance.

[Problem] The present invention relates to a manufacturing method for obtaining a molded article having an expanded layer in the molded article, wherein an expanding agent and device used to manufacture a resin having expansion properties, and a means for increasing expansion ratio are provided.[Solution] In the present invention, an expanding agent placed in a heating cylinder of a molding machine is configured as a liquid, the volume of the expanding agent is controlled, and the expanding agent is injected into a molten resin in the heating cylinder of the molding machine. The volume of the injected expanding agent can thereby be accurately measured each time. When a low-boiling liquid such as water, an alcohol, or an ether is used as the injected expanding agent, all of the liquid is vaporized by the temperature of the heating cylinder of the molding machine, and no residue thereof is therefore left in the molded article. When sodium bicarbonate water is used as the injected expanding agent, solvent water vaporizes and water vapor also becomes expandable gas, which is less expensive than using sodium bicarbonate as the expanding agent for a master batch using the resin that is to be molded.

A controller-transmitter transmits acoustic energy through the body to an implanted acoustic receiver-stimulator. The receiver-stimulator converts the acoustic energy into electrical energy and delivers the electrical energy to tissue using an electrode assembly. The receiver-stimulator limits the output voltage delivered to the tissue to a predetermined maximum output voltage. In the presence of interfering acoustic energy sources output voltages are thereby limited prior to being delivered to the tissue.Furthermore, the controller-transmitter estimates the output voltage that is delivered to the tissue by the implanted receiver-stimulator. The controller-transmitter measures a query spike voltage resulting from the electrical energy delivered to the tissue by the receiver-stimulator, and computes a ratio of the predetermined maximum output voltage and a maximum query spike voltage. The maximum query spike voltage is computed by detecting a query spike voltage plateau. Based on this ratio, the controller-transmitter uses a measured query spike voltage to estimate the output voltage delivered by the receiver-stimulator to tissue.
