A container for a pile of square or rectangular photographic pictures of the same size comprises a casing (12) provided with a window (35) for visualizing the picture on top of the pile, and a sliding member (14) parallel to the window (35), susceptible of coming out of and getting into the casing (12) to receive the pile of pictures. The sliding member (14) has a grip (48) provided with a holding-down pad (38) for the pile, arranged opposite the pile so as to slide backwards towards the grip (48). The holding-down pad (48) is spring-pretensioned against the grip (48), and a stop (83) is formed in the casing (12) to stop the holding-down pad (38) in an intermediate position between its two extreme positions, wherein the holding-down pad (38) does not grip the edge of the pile.
