3-Substituted biphenyl compound useful as components of chiral liquid crystal compositions (which compositions may be used for light-switching elements including ferroelectric liquid crystals) have the formula
in which one of R¹ and R² is a C₄-C₁₈ alkyl group having a methyl branch and the other is a C₂-C₁₈ alkyl group; X is a fluorine, chlorine or bromine atom or a cyano group; and ℓ is 0 or 1.
