An improved process for producing a 2-oxazolidinone of the formula
wherein R represents hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group and R 1 and R 2 are the same as or different and each represent hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group, by reacting an amino-alcohol of the formula
wherein R, R 1 and R 2 are each as defined above, and/or its hydrochloride, with phosgene is provided, which process is characterized by carrying out the reaction substantially in the presence of water and a dehydrochlorinating agent, preferably while keeping the pH of the reaction liquid within a range of 3.0 to 10.0 with the dehydrochlorinating agent in water solvent.
