A rotor assembly (10) comprises a high energy product permanent magnet (12) contained within a sheath (14) and metallurgically bonded thereto. The metallurgical bond imparts mechanical strength to the magnet (12) thereby preventing crack propagation therewithin during operation of the rotor assembly (10) and minimizes the thermal barrier to the transfer of heat from the magnet (12) to the sheath (14).
