The present invention is an automated aquaculture system which comprises: one or more culture tanks (10) connected to a closed system of filters (22) and ultraviolet (80) or ozone sources for water purification prior to returning water to the culture tanks (10). Also disclosed as part of the system are automated biofilters (60, 70) that automatically monitor water conditions in the system, and video cameras in the tanks that monitor growth and condition of the animals in the tank. This invention is also a process useful for culturing an aquatic species, using the disclosed systems. Preferred species include shrimp, squid, marine fishes and fingerlings and marine mollusks.
