A colorful liquid crystal display device which enables multicolor display and a driving method which drives the liquid crystal display by utilizing an ordinary black-and-white liquid crystal driving IC. An ordinary character display part (41) which provides single-color display and a mark display part (42) which provides multicolor display and exhibits colorfulness are provided in the display unit of a double-refractive color type liquid crystal display device. Scanning signals are applied to the scanning electrode of the character display part (41) and data signals are applied to the scanning electrode of the mark display part (42) to drive a liquid crystal device.
