Apparatus for determining patency of the airway of a patient comprises:
means for measuring respiratory air flow from the patient to derive an air flow signal; and
a processor for analyzing said air flow signal to detect the presence of a cardiogenic air flow component, and determining whether the airway is patent depending upon the presence of a cardiogenic air flow component.
