The invention relates to a method for detecting weather-related visibility limitations, wherein image data are produced by means of a bifocal camera (1). The camera is focused on the windshield in a first image area and on the vehicle surroundings in a second image area. If wetting of the windshield with moisture and/or condensate is detected, a first evaluation signal is generated. In order to detect a visibility limitation due to fog and/or wetting of the windshield with moisture and/or condensate, a second evaluation signal follows. A control device (2) is also provided, which activates a windshield wiper (3) if first and second evaluation signals (St1, St2) are generated and deactivates the windshield wiper after a specified duration if the first and second evaluation signals (St1, St2) are present after the specified duration and activates a window heater (4) of the vehicle after the windshield wiper (3) has been deactivated, and which activates a warning device (5) and/or a front fog lamp (6) and/or a rear fog lamp (7) if only the second evaluation signal is present. The invention further relates to devices for carrying out the method.
