The invention relates to a device (1) for driving at least one output shaft (3) of a rail vehicle, comprising a power plant (4), the at least one output shaft (3) being operatively connectible to at least one wheel (2) and a transmission system (6) being arranged on the drive side of the at least one output shaft (3). At least two transmission ratios can be produced in the region of the transmission system (6). The invention further relates to a method for operating such a device (1).
