Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an animal chew excellent in therapeutic and cleaning effects on teeth, gingiva and oral cavity in comparison with conventional examples by utilizing electric wave, ultrasonic wave or sound wave without utilizing mechanical energy alone, i.e., the animal's chewing action as shown in conventional examples. SOLUTION: This animal chew 10 has a body 11. The body 11 contains a low voltage battery 18 and first and second conductors 24 and 26 selected from and various materials such that when chewed by an animal, an electrical circuit is formed and a micro-current flows. The micro-current has therapeutic effects on the animal's teeth and gums, and optionally, low concentrations of certain trace metals which are released from the body 11 similarly have beneficial results regarding the animal's oral hygiene. In addition, upon chewing, calcium ions and/or fluoride ions can be discharged. Finally, ultrasonic sound waves which can be generated when an animal chews further assist in removal of dental plaque from the animal's teeth and gums.
