A vibration-relevant characteristic of the vibratory means can be adapted during the operation of the electric tool in such a way that the amplitude, the phase position and/or the frequency of the counteracting vibration varies with a change in the vibration-relevant characteristic. The vibratory means of the electric tool has a natural frequency which can be varied by variation means of the electric tool. A method for compensating housing vibrations, in particular of the electric tool, includes imparting a counteracting vibration by a vibratory means which counteracts a housing vibration of the electric tool. The amplitude, the phase position and/or the frequency of the counteracting vibration is varied during the operation of the electric tool.
