The method for producing a wavelength converting member, including: providing a green body prepared by a process comprising molding a mixed powder containing a Ca-α-SiAlON fluorescent material and alumina, and depending on necessity an YAG fluorescent material; and primarily sintering the green body at a temperature in a range of 1,000° C. or more and 1,600° C. or less to obtain a first sintered body.
