Aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic esters of 3,5-dihalo-4hydroxybenzonitrile are prepared by gradually adding the solid benzonitrile derivative to a slight molar excess of the corresponding acid chloride kept at temperatures above 120* C and venting the liberated hydrogen chloride through an alkaline scrubber.
