One substrate includes a linear array of row control electrodes and one set of picture element electrodes and the other includes a linear array of column control electrodes and an opposite set of picture element electrodes. On each substrate, each picture element electrode is connected to a control electrode by way of a pair of single-stage diodes connected in parallel but oppositely poled.
