A dual mode cradle, base station (40) having a re-charging mode and a transmitting mode for wireless communication with a remote device (60) and recharging a handheld scanning device (10) is provided. The dual mode cradle, base station (40) includes a transmitting subunit (42) for wirelessly transmitting data originating from the handheld scanning device (10) to a remote device (60); a re-charging subsystem (44) disposed to be coupled to an electric power source (50) for charging a battery within the handheld scanning device (10); and a scanning subsystem (48). The scanning subsystem (48) includes the handheld scanning device (10); a polygon mirror (14) adapted to notably reflect a light path (12) originating from the handhold scanning device (10), the light path (12) disperse into a pattern for scanning a symbol.
