A flexible display (407) has barrier or other protective layers which are attached to the display only along a seam (405) , rather than being attached to a surface of the display (400) . The protective layers form an envelope or bag (404) , which may have different properties on each side of the display surface (400) and may be filled with an inert gas or inert and optically compensating liquid. The durability and lifetime of the display are increased.

A lithographically defined resist pattern (211, 311) provides barriers and cavities which serve to guide subsequently printed materials. Different components of the integrated circuitry form separate islands on the substrate (206). The risk of adjacent films cracking and peeling from stress is reduced. The flexibility of the device is increased.
