A press plate for producing decorative laminate from resin impregnated paper, with alumina particles on its pressing surface, is coated with diborides selected from the group consisting of hafnium diboride, molybdenum diboride, tantalum diboride, titanium diboride, tungsten diboride, vanadium diboride, or zirconium diboride or mixtures thereof for making the press plate resistant to scratching. The preferred diborides are titanium and zirconium. The most preferred diboride is titanium. The color, gloss and surface appearance of laminate pressed with a titanium diboride coated press plate is substantially the same as laminate pressed with the press plate before coating.

A decorative laminate panel (10) comprising a decorative surfacing layer (14), a backing layer (16) and a substrate (18) between the decorative surfacing layer and the backing layer, the substrate including an edge (20). The surfacing layer, the edge of the substrate and the backing layer define a recess (22). An edge member (24) is positioned within the recess and includes an outwardly facing interlocking profile (26) for attachment to adjacent panels. The invention relates also to an assembly comprising two panels and one connector. Each panel has a recess formed in at least one outer edge and a groove formed in a bottom surface adjacent the recess. The connector includes a base with a projection shaped and dimensioned for receipt within the recess of each panel. The base further includes two protrusions shaped and dimensioned for receipt within the grooves formed in the bottom surface of the panels.
