摘要:
Apparatus for fixing the position of an optical sensor within a range of motion in relation to an optical apparatus. The fixing apparatus provides permits a range of motion through five degrees of freedom (DOF) during the securing process. The apparatus includes a housing for the optical assembly, a middle bracket, with the middle bracket secured to the optical apparatus. The range of motion is provided by a gimbal design in the housing and middle bracket which creates the five DOF. There are no screws involved in the fixing process to impart torques or forces to the parts being aligned and secured in position. An ultraviolet (UV) activated adhesive is used to secure the sensor housing to the middle bracket and the middle bracket to the optical scanner housing. The middle bracket is formed of a material transparent to UV light, and a high percentage of the UV light can pass through it to cure the adhesive applied between the parts. A vertical hole runs through tabs of both the housing and the middle bracket. The adhesive is applied into this region where it is constrained by the parts. The adhesive is a liquid during the alignment process which allows relative motion between the parts. When alignment is complete, the adhesive region is exposed to UV light which cures the adhesive into a solid vertical column, creating a form of chemical rivet. This chemical rivet provides a very strong mechanical interlock of the components in addition to the adhesive bonding of the components.

Color inkjet printers (10) commonly employ a plurality of print cartridges (22), usually either two or four, mounted in the printer carriage (20) to produce a full spectrum of colors. In order to optimize print quality, it is desirable to minimize the distance between a thermal inkjet printhead (26) and the media (90) that is being printed on. In a multiple printhead printer (10) only one printhead (26) can be the closest one to the media (90) due to the various mechanical tolerances of the printer (10). Since black text print quality is more sensitive to printhead-to-media distance than is color graphics quality, the overall print quality of both black text and color graphics is optimized by assuring that the black print cartridge (22) is closest to the media (90). Disclosed is a method for determining the relevant tolerances affecting printhead-to-media distance, analyzing the tolerance values to determine the range of tolerances and the greatest variation between one print cartridge and another, such that a determined percentage of the sampled print cartridges fall within this variation. This value is then used to offset the black print cartridge (22) carriage slot (24) so that the black print cartridge will be closest to the media (90).

To accommodate placement of both input and output media trays (54, 56) on the same side of the housing of an ink-jet printer (50) for operator convenience, a paper path with a direction reversal is employed. A radiant print heater (108) with a reflector cavity (110) heats the medium (90) at the print area to increase the ink carrier evaporation rate. The printer provides improved medium control at the print area through an arrangement of small diameter drive and tension shafts (160, 162) and shortened handoff distance between the rollers. The heater is disposed between the drive and tension rollers. To minimise the handoff distance, portions of the drive rollers (100A, 100B) extend into the reflector cavity.

A carriage support system for a computer driven printer/plotter employs a slider rod (6) and a slider bar (8) mounted parallel to each other on a printer chassis (4) wherein the bar supports the front side of a printer carriage (10) and the rod supports the rear side of the carriage thus eliminating expensive centerless ground carriage support rods. The slider bar also has a plurality of dual edge paper pinch wheels (100) supported thereon which are biased into engagement with the paper or other medium on which printing takes place by a plurality of springs (112) integrally formed from a single member affixed to the slider bar.
