The invention relates to a ferroelectric liquid-crystal display containing a ferroelectric liquid-crystal mixture, characterized in that the display is controlled with voltage pulses ≥0.9 ms. The display provided for by the invention is especially suited for applications in which the length of switching time is not critical. Such displays can be switched with the same voltage in a very wide range of temperatures, thus making it unnecessary for the voltage to be adjusted in line with the temperature. Potential applications include displays in chip cards, electronic pricing or display signs (shelf labels), PDAs (personal digital assistants) and pagers.

The object of the present invention is to provide a ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture having a negative value of Δε and allowing a high speed response and a low voltage driving, as well as a liquid crystal display device using the liquid crystal mixture of the invention. The ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture according to the invention comprises two or more compounds from at least two different of the following classes of compounds: A. thiadiazoles, B. phenanthrenes, C. 2-fluoropyridines, D. difluorobenzenes, E. meta-substituted aromatic compounds.
