A system for controlling a motor vehicle automatic transmission comprises a means of estimating engine torque and a means of estimating vehicle acceleration, a map (3) of the resistive forces to which the vehicle is subjected as a function of its speed, stored maps of gear shifts suited to various road profiles, and a system (1) for selecting configured gear shift laws in order, using the said engine torque, the said acceleration and the said map of resistive force, to determine the current slope of the road surface along which the vehicle is moving. The said system for selecting the gear shift laws comprises a filter (4) delivering a mean value of this current slope, and the said gear shifts law selection system is configured to impose on the transmission at least one ascent gear shift law if the current slope is steeper than a first threshold (S3), at least one horizontal terrain gear shift law if the current slope and the mean slope value are respectively lower than a second threshold (S2) lower than the first and lower than a third threshold (S1) lower than the second, and at least one intermediate gear shift law that is somewhere between the ascent law and the horizontal terrain law if the current slope is less than the second threshold (S2) and, at the same time, the mean value of slope is greater than the third threshold (S1).
