This invention relates to an improved process for removing trace levels of Group IVb contaminants from a Group IVb metal tetrahalide of and particularly to a process for removing zirconium tetrachloride from titanium tetrachloride. The improvement resides in contacting a titanium tetrachloride feedstock containing trace impurities of zirconium tetrachloride or hafnium tetrachloride with a sufficient amount of titanium hydride to convert any zirconium tetrachloride or hafnium tetrachloride to a lower volatile compound. The resultant mixture is distilled and the titanium tetrachloride separated from the lower volatile zirconium or hafnium compounds.

This process consists of forming a homogeneous solution by mixing one or more rare earth and/or alkali earth halogenoalkoxides in an anhydrous organic solvent, and hydrolysing this solution. The novel materials are obtained at room temperature and are in powder, fibre, film or bulk material form.

The present invention relates to a method for minimizing hydrogen halide corrosion in quench gasifier during the non-catalytic partial oxidation reaction of a halogen-containing hydrocarbonaceous feed, to produce a hydrogen halide-containing synthesis gas, finely divided particulate solids, and a nontoxic slag. The hydrogen halide-containing synthesis gas is contacted with water in the quench zone (14) of the gasifier (10). The quench water contains a neutralizing agent, in excess of the amount necessary to neutralize hydrogen halide acids present therein, to thereby form halide salts. The quench water containing the halide salts is purified to recover the halide salts. The salt-free water is essentially environmentally non-toxic and can either be recycled to the process or discarded in conformity with environmental regulations.

A method for modifying the transfer characteristics of a porous organic or inorganic membrane, wherein (a) at least one layer is formed on the membrane by applying at least one uniform solution prepared by mixing one or more rare earth or alkaline-earth fluoroalkoxides with an anhydrous organic solvent at room temperature and in an inert atmosphere; (b) hydrolysis is performed by contacting the layer of (a) with an amount of water at least as great as the stoichiometric amount needed to hydrolyse the fluoroalkoxides; and (c) rinsing the membrane with water to remove the resulting soluble salts. The resulting modified membranes are useful for regenerating photographic solutions, particularly black and white developers, and for separating organic compounds from aqueous effluents.
