One system includes a control device having a two piece shaft including a first shaft portion and a second shaft portion, a spline key detachably coupling the first shaft portion and the second shaft portion, and a crankshaft operatively coupling the two piece shaft and a flight control surface. The control device further includes a driving mechanism coupled to the spline key and operable to move the spline key to engage and disengage the first and second shaft portions, wherein the first and second shaft portions are disengaged when a failure to the flight control surface is detected, causing the second shaft portion to drive the flight control surface to a safe position.

    摘要: A apparatus in the form of a torsional propulsion device functioning as an engine (10) for delivery of sustained mechanical power over an extended duration with only intermittent energy input. The engine (10) comprises an input shaft (11), an output shaft (13) and a drive mechanism (40) therebetween. The drive mechanism (40) comprises a drive gear (45), an input mechanism (71), and a spring mechanism (73) operably connected to the drive gear 45. The spring mechanism (73) is adapted to be loaded by the input mechanism (71) during the loading event. The loaded spring mechanism (73) is adapted to rotate the drive gear (45) in a driving direction during a driving event, the driving event being of a duration exceeding that of the loading event. The duration of the driving event is significantly greater than the duration of the loading event such that the drive mechanism (40) can deliver output energy for an extended duration as compared to the duration of energy input. Typically, the duration of the driving event is of at least an order of magnitude greater than the duration of the loading event.

    摘要: A spring motor (10) for driving an electric power generator (12) with constant power includes a crank-up spool (14), a take-up spool (16), and a relatively wide, flat tape spring (18) which winds in a relaxed condition on the take-up spool. In one form, the spring has a width which varies approximately linearly from one end to another end so as to generate a constant torque at a fixed radius from an axis of the crank-up spool as the spring unwinds. In another form, the spring width is constant and a separate drum is driven by contact with the unwinding spring, with the separate drum driving an output shaft. In still another form, an idler wheel is driven by contact with the spring and the output shaft is driven from the idler wheel through gear contact with the periphery of an output drum mounted on the output shaft.
