An improved telephone system (10) over a single telephone line within a residence or other building is disclosed, supporting exchange features and enabling easy expansion for multiple external lines. The existing telephone wiring is used as the medium for a local data communication network, carrying mutiple voice channels. In each outlet (88a, 105a), one or more voice channels are converted into a standard telephone-line interface. Life-line functionality is facilitated by using the lower band of the spectrum isolated from the data communication network, and a dedicated connector (91) in the outlet provides access to this band. External telephone feeders (86a, 86b) are converted to digital form for interfacing to the in-home data communication network.

This invention relates to a method to establish a conference connection between a plurality of conference nodes (2, 4, 8) arranged in a telecommunication network (1); and also to a node design (30; Fig 3) of such a conference node. The conference according to this invention is set up on a per call basis. Any of the conference nodes (2, 4, 8) shall, each time it activates, access a free information resource (11) among a plurality of resources (11, 12,...,n) and transmit it's message to this resource; while all the conference nodes during all the conference time, are listening to the messages present on all the activated or occupied resources. The maximum number of active (i.e. transmitting) conference nodes correspond to the total number of information resources. The maximum number of passive (i.e. listening) nodes are unlimited. A node is typically moving from a passive state to an active state and back again to the passive state leaving the resource unoccupied. Each resource may preferably be designed as a ring connection via which all the conference nodes are interconnected as the ring is looped through passive conference nodes, but where each activated ring connection is broken, only at one place, but in a dynamic manner, at the input of the active node associated with just this ring, which active node accesses this particular resource during the activated time period of just this node. The invention is well suited for digital crypto conferences, as speech decoding and decrypting is undertaken at each conference node input, while encryption and speech coding is done at each conference node output. In addition the invention is easily adapted to an Integrated Services Data Network (ISDN). Echo suppression, as well as addition and subtraction of conference signals, are totally avoided. The crypto keys to be used in such a crypto conference, may be distributed among the conference participating nodes before the conference starts; and/or they may be altered during the conference, in short lasting pauses in the conference, or on a free resource, or via the D-channel in the ISDN implementation.

This invention relates to a telecommunication system including a conference information system including a number of participants each equipped with a separate node (2, 4, 8), which conference nodes may be interconnected via a switching network (1) such as a public switched telephone network, and where each participant node (2, 4 , 8) is including means for receiving a sum conference information signal from the other participating nodes, means for adding the signal generated in each conference node to the sum signal, and means for controlling the conferencing functions. According to this invention all of the nodes (2, 4, 8) in the conference connection are interconnected in a complete conference ring (11) by means of one single connection (12) in which the information signals are transmitted from node to node in one single direction (arrow 12). When the tap cable (TC) is connected to a second portion (73) of the tap box (TBA), the first impedance (79, 81) is effectively removed from the single communications path and a test impedance (77) is coupled to the tap cable to enable the station associated with the tap cable to test itself.

A communications system that improves upon the availability of communications paths between devices and simplifies the connectivity requirements to communicate data and control information to and from a remote station (11). System nodes (21) are provided which are disposed along a time multiplex network signal stream. The nodes (21) serve to interface remote stations (11) to the network signal stream (25A, 25B) and may also switch information to different stations (11) connected to the same node (21). The nodes (21) are operative to allocate a variable bandwidth of the network signal stream for data communications between devices connected to different nodes. The nodes (21) include switching devices that may be configured to accomodate stations (11) that operate at different speeds. Allocation of bandwidth may be dynamically varied such that system resources are not unneccessarily diverted. Control of bandwidth allocation and internal switching within the node is accomplished via control information communicated to and from the node. Such control information may be contained within the network signal stream and decoded by the node (21) or communicated to the node (21) via a dedicated control communications line. Control information may be encoded into the signal stream communicated between the system node (21) and the remote station (11). Thus, communication of data and control signals between the stations (11) and the system node (21) does not require complex wiring. Accordingly, individual stations (11) may be more conveniently located.
