The method may comprise performing thermal processing to determine a loss on ignition for a representative first portion of a sample of the product; identifying and quantifying primary and secondary peaks present in a first diffraction pattern that results from bulk powder X-ray Diffraction on a representative second portion of the sample; and using a known standard sample of cristobalite to determine whether the primary and secondary peaks present in the first diffraction pattern indicate the presence of opal-C or cristobalite in the product.

A method of manufacturing ceramic filter media for water filters involves the steps of mixing a plurality of raw ceramic materials and a plurality of extrusion-aid materials to form a mixture of constituent materials, extruding the constituent materials to form tubular filter media, drying the tubular filter media, and firing the tubular filter media to create ceramic tubular filter media. The step of drying the tubular filter media preferably comprises placing the tubular filter media on top of rotating rollers which dries the tubular filter media evenly and preserves the desired characteristics of the tubular filter media.

Light aggregate for use as inert material in a concrete composition, comprising a mix of: ground diatomaceous rock making up 85-95% by weight of the mix; a melting additive (A) (2.5-7.5% by weight) and an expander additive (B) (1.5-10.5% by weight); this mix is made up with water, transformed into granules and heat-treated at between 1100 and 1250°C for a period of between 5 and 25 minutes. Both the melting additive (A) and the expander additive (B) can be wastes from the secondary processing of aluminum.
