An interactive distance learning system is disclosed which is characterized by individual attention to each student. A live lecture, transmitted from a remote location (100), is accompanied by questions (480) to gage comprehension by students. The questions and possible answers for student choice are graphically displayed on a video screen (186). Affirmative supportive commentary is prepared prior to the lecture and prerecorded for each of the possible correct and inccorect responses. Each response teaches, confirms and encourages the learning experience. A processor (178), branching codes and a memory device (282, 286) can be used to create a large variety of responses to provide individual responses for students. The transmitted interactive signal can be recorded (294) and remain fully interactive. An extremely flexible, relatively inexpensive system is thus created which uniquely teaches and uniquely addresses the needs of every student.

A closed circuit interactive television system (10) provides a multichannel television signal from a localized head end (12) which is used for individualized interactive selections by a plurality of users (22, 24, 26). Each user station contains a conventional television receiver (32a, 32b, 32c) and a smart box or interface and selection device (30a, 30b, 30c). The smart box or interface and selection device (30) is disposed between the television receiver (32) and the RF distribution amplifier (36). The number of user stations (22, 24, 26) on the system (10) is virtually unlimited. The system (10) provides the audio/video television signals (14, 16, 18, 20) in at least frame accurate synchronization to enable seamless video switching between channels, which seamlessness is enhanced through the view of a pair of tuners in the interface selection box (30a, 30b, 30c) which are alternately commanded to pretune to the channel of the next actual choice made prior to the changeover under control of a microprocessor in response to command signals embedded in the television signals being received.

A method for providing a full motion synched compatible audio/visual interactive television display from a plurality of syllable synched compatible audio choices for a common full motion video frame presentation. Two or more audio channels are synched to a common video channel by first recording the most likely branch and then rerecording the audio portions for the alternate branches by syllable synching the alternate branch choices to the original video presentation so as to make the video compatible with all audio channels. Animated characters, such as puppets, cartoon animations or humans, are used in the video with the audio being synched to the mouth movements of such an animated character so that all branches appear to be visually the same. The same techniques can be used to convert appropriate preexisting non-interactive programming into interactive programming.

Two or more audio channels are synched to a common video channel, with the video being compatible with all audio channels. The interactive programming is stored on video cassette (12), or other storage media and the audio channels are either multiplexed into the video line or the existing audio channels and are provided to a control module (14) which demultiplexes the signal (16) and ultimately combines the user selected audio signal with the video in an RF modulator (20) under computer control (18, 22, 24, 26) to provide the interactive display.
