Sulfur-based electrodes, and associated systems and methods for their fabrication, are generally described. Certain embodiments relate to sulfur-based electrodes with smooth external surfaces. According to some embodiments, relatively large forces can be applied to compositions from which the sulfur-based electrodes are made during the fabrication process. In some such embodiments, the compositions can maintain relatively high porosities, even after the relatively large forces have been applied to them. Methods in which liquids are employed during the electrode fabrication process are also described.

The present invention relates to a lithium-sulfur electrochemical cell comprising as component (A) an electrode comprising lithium metal or lithium alloy, and lithium ion conductively connected thereto as component (B) a glass ceramic membrane comprising an amorphous phase, as component (C) a liquid electrolyte comprising at least one solvent and at least one lithium salt, as component (D) an electrode comprising sulfur as a cathode active species. The present invention also relates to battery comprising a lithium-sulfur electrochemical cell as defined herein. The present invention further relates to the use of a glass ceramic membrane as defined herein as a separator in (i) a lithium-sulfur electrochemical cell, or (ii) a battery comprising at least one lithium-sulfur electrochemical cell.

Electrolyte materials for use in electrochemical cells, electrochemical cells comprising the same, and methods of making such materials and cells, are generally described. In some embodiments, the materials, processes, and uses described herein relate to electrochemical cells comprising sulfur and lithium such as, for example, lithium sulfur batteries. The electrolyte can comprise a polymeric material and, in some cases, an absorbed auxiliary material. For example, the electrolyte material can be capable of forming a gel, and the auxiliary material can comprise an electrolyte solvent. In some instances, the electrolyte material can comprise at least one organic (co)polymer selected from polyethersulfones, polyvinylalcohols (PVOH) and branched polyimides (HPI). The non-fluid material in the electrolyte, when configured for use, can, alone or in combination with the optional absorbed auxiliary material, have a yield strength greater than that of lithium metal, in some embodiments.
